A little way down North Street from the cathedral, housed in a rather cute little sixteenth-century cottage with a low wooden door, the St Andrews Preservation Trust Museum and Garden (June-Sept daily 2-5pm; free) presents a cosy picture of the town's history often forgotten in its towering ruins and glamorous golf connections. As you progress towards the centre of town, it's clear that you're in amongst the buildings of St Andrews University, the oldest in Scotland, founded in 1410 by Bishop Henry Wardlaw, although James I, to whom the bishop was tutor, is the nominal founder (and was a great benefactor of the university). A guided tour of the university buildings starts from the International Office, Butts Wynd, near St Salvator's Chapel (June-Aug Mon-Fri 11.30am & 2pm; £4), or you can wander freely around the buildings at your own pace.
