St Andrews has no shortage of restaurants and cafés and, given the local student population, there's plenty of choice in pubs.
Restaurants
La Posada Inchcape House, St Mary's Place. Located opposite the student union, this is a lively Mexican place with a bit more originality in its design and menu than many Tex-Mex efforts. Moderate.
Peat Inn Five miles southwest of town tel 01334/840206, www.thepeatinn.co.uk. One of Britain's top restaurants, serving a varied menu of local specialities. The dining area is intimate without being cramped, and a three-course meal - perhaps featuring lobster broth, venison or roast monkfish - will set you back at least £40 per head. Very expensive.
West Port 170-172 South St tel 01334/473186. Designer restaurant serving ambitious Modern Scottish fare, though they also have simpler, well-priced set menus. Can attract a few too many rich, loud students in term-time. Moderate-expensive.
Pubs and bars
Broons Bistro and Bar North Street. Right beside the classic New Picture House cinema, quickly established as a young and fun café-bar-bistro with regular live music sessions.
Inn on North Street 127 North St. Tends to attract slightly older students, but houses the happening Lizard basement nightclub at weekends.
Ma Belle's 40 The Scores. In the basement of the St Andrews Golf Hotel, a lively pub serving cheap food which is often thronged with students.
Rusacks Lounge Bar 16 Pilmour Links. Hotel bar with the best views of the Old Course. Settle into one of their comfy chairs and watch golfers through huge windows as you sip pricey drinks.
