Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch

-> Scotland -> Central Scotland -> Perthshire -> Highland Perthshire -> Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch

West of Pitlochry, the B8019/B846 makes a memorably scenic traverse of the shores of Loch Tummel and then Loch Rannoch. This is a spectacular stretch of countryside and one which deserves leisurely exploration. Queen's View at the eastern end of Loch Tummel is a fabulous vantage point, looking down the loch across the hills to the misty peak of Schiehallion (3520ft) or the "Fairy Mountain", one of the few free-standing hills in Scotland. It's a popular and inspiring mountain to climb, with views on a good day to both sides of Scotland; the path up starts at Braes of Foss, just off the B846 which links Aberfeldy with Kinloch Rannoch.

Beyond Loch Tummel, marking the eastern end of Loch Rannoch, the small community of KINLOCH RANNOCH doesn't see a lot of passing trade - fishermen and hill-walkers are the most common visitors. Otherwise, the only real destination here is Rannoch Station, a lonely outpost on the Glasgow-Fort William West Highland train, six miles or so beyond the western end of Loch Rannoch. The road goes no further. Here you can contemplate the bleakness of Rannoch Moor, a wide expanse of bog, heather and wind-blown pine tree which stretches right across to the imposing entrance to Glen Coe. There is a tearoom and hotel here, but even these struggle to diminish the feeling of isolation.
