Around Stirling

-> Scotland -> Central Scotland -> Stirling, the Trossachs and Loch Lomond -> Stirling -> Around Stirling

Stirling's strategic position between the Highlands and Lowlands was not only important in medieval times, but as the industrial revolution grew across Scotland's central belt so the town's proximity to the Forth gave it renewed significance. To the north of Stirling, the historic aspect of the region is reflected in the cathedral at Dunblane and the imposing castle at Doune, while to the east and south, on either side of the Forth, the Clackmannanshire mill towns and the area around Falkirk tell of a rich industrial heritage. An undoubted highlight of this hinterland is the massive Falkirk Wheel, a spectacular feat of engineering which transfers canal boats up and down a 100-foot drop at the interchange of the newly restored Forth & Clyde and Union canals.
