The peninsula's largest settlement is TAIN, an attractive and pleasant small town of grand whisky-coloured sandstone buildings that was the birthplace of St Duthus, an eleventh-century missionary who inspired great devotion in the Middle Ages. A good place to get to grips with the peninsula's past is the Tain Through Time exhibition (April-Oct daily 10am-6pm; call for winter opening hours; tel 01862/894089; £3.50), which makes creative use of three old buildings around the church and graveyard, leading you round using an audioguide. Tain's other main attraction is the whisky distillery where the highly rated Glenmorangie malt is produced (tel 01862/892477; shop Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, June-Aug also Sat 10am-4pm, Sun noon-4pm; tours Mon-Fri 10am-3.30pm, Sat & Sun 10.30am-2.30pm; £2); it lies just off the A9 on the north side of town. Booking is recommended for the tours.
