Ten miles northeast of Fort William, the village of Spean Bridge marks the junction of the A82 with the A86 from Dalwhinnie and Kingussie. If you're here, its well worth heading a mile out of the village on the A82 towards Inverness to the Commando Memorial, a group of bronze soldiers sculpted in 1952 by Scott Sutherland in memory of the men who trained in the area and lost their lives during World War II. The statue stands on a raised promontory overlooking an awesome sweep of moor and mountain that takes in Lochaber and the Ben Nevis massif. A few hundred yards from the memorial, on the minor B8004 which heads towards Gairlochy, is one of the Highland's great foodie havens, the Old Pines"restaurant with rooms" (tel 01397/712324, www.oldpines.co.uk; half-board £110-150). The house and rooms are welcoming and comfortable, as well as being well set-up for guests with disabilities and families with children.
