-> East of Inverness
East of Inverness lies the fertile, sheltered coastal strip of the Moray Firth and its hinterland. Primary among the sites is Culloden, the most poignant battlefield site in Scotland, where Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobites were routed in 1746. Further east are Cawdor Castle and Fort George, two of the best preserved fortified structures in the Highlands. Nairn, the main town of the district, has a pretty harbour as well as appealing walks and cycle routes.
The overloaded A96 traverses this stretch and the region is well served by public transport, with all the historic sites and castles accessible on day-trips from Inverness, or en route to Aberdeen. To get to Fort George, Cawdor Castle and Culloden you can juggle the Highland County Tourist Trail buses (#11, #12 and #13; £6 for a day rover ticket) which depart from Queens Gate in Inverness.
