Buses run from Aviemore and Inverness to the small town of GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY, about fifteen miles northeast of Aviemore, which makes a relaxing alternative base for exploring the Strathspey area. Life is concentrated around the central square, with its attractive Georgian architecture, including a small museum and resource centre on Burnfield Avenue (Mon-Fri 10am-4pm; £2; www.grantown-on-spey.co.uk) which tells the story of the town. The tourist office is on the High Street (April-Oct Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm; tel 01479/872773).
As with much of Speyside, there's a decent choice of accommodation. For B&B, Parkburn Guest House (tel 01479/873116; £40-50) is welcoming, while, if you're after something more upmarket, head for the large seventeenth-century Garth Hotel, at the north end of the square (tel 01479/872836; £50-60). In the budget range, Speyside Backpackers at The Stopover, 16 The Square (tel 01479/873514, www.scotpackers-hostels.co.uk) has dorms and doubles (under £40) with excellent facilities.
