Kingussie's friendly tourist office is in the same building as the entrance to the Highland Folk Museum, on Duke Street (same hours as museum; tel 01540/661297). The Wildcat Centre in Newtonmore (Mon-Fri 9.30am-12.30pm & 2.15-5.15pm, Sat 9.30am-12.30pm) also offers local information and details of walking trails in the area. Bike rental is available at Cairngorm Mountain Tours in Newtonmore. Dunmhor House (tel 01540/661809; under £40) is a good-value B&B on the main street in Kingussie, while the best of the local hostels are the Newtonmore Independent Hostel (tel 01540/673360, www.highlandhostel.co.uk), a welcoming and well-equipped place, and the Strathspey Mountain Hostel (tel 01540/673694), just up the road, which is also of a high standard.
The most ambitious food in the area is served at the Cross restaurant, in a converted tweed mill on Tweed Mill Brae in Kingussie (tel 01540/661166, www.thecross.co.uk; closed Tues & Dec-Feb). Cheaper food is available at several cafés and pubs in both towns - the Glen or the Brae Riach in Newtonmore, or the Royal Hotel or Tipsy Laird in Kingussie.
