Six miles from Haddington along the A6093, the village of Pencaitland is the closest place to Edinburgh where malt whisky is made. Set in a peaceful dip in the rolling countryside about two miles outside Pencaitland, the Glenkinchie Distillery (June-Oct Mon-Sat 9.30am-5pm, Sun noon-5pm; March-May Mon-Fri 10am-5pm; Nov-Feb Mon-Fri 11am-4pm; £3.50) is one of only a handful found in the Lowlands of Scotland. Here, of course, they emphasize the qualities which set Glenkinchie, a lighter, drier malt, apart from the peaty, smoky whiskies of the north. Also in the tour there's an impressive scale model of a distillery, allowing you to place all the different processes in context, and a room where the art of blending is explained.
