Accommodation

As befits a high-flying business city, Aberdeen has a large choice of accommodation - much of it characterless and expensive. Many B&Bs and guest houses are strung along Bon Accord and Crown streets (served by buses #6 and #17 to and from Union Street) and the Great Western Road (buses #18, #19 and #24).

Allan Guest House 56 Polmuir Rd tel 01224/584484, www.camtay.co.uk. Unexpectedly tasteful and enthusiastically run guest house not far from Duthie Park. Good meals or supper available if arranged in advance. £50-60.

Braeside Guest House 68 Bon Accord St tel 01224/571471. Standard but inexpensive B&B within easy walking distance of the station and city centre. Under £40.

Ferryhill House 169 Bon Accord St tel 01224/590867. A mansion set apart in its own grounds within walking distance of Union St. Its historic pub has real ale, a beer garden and decent food. £70-90.

Globe Inn 13-15 North Silver St tel 01224/624258. Easy-going, traditional-style city-centre inn with seven en-suite rooms above a bar which regularly features live jazz. Rate includes continental breakfast. £40-50.

Jay's Guest House 422 King St tel 01224/638295, www.jaysguesthouse.co.uk. Well-run, non-smoking house located in Old Aberdeen, near the university. £50-60.

King George VI Memorial Hostel 8 Queen's Rd tel 01224/646988, www.syha.org.uk. Rather soulless SYHA hostel with rooms for four to six, and a 2am curfew. Bus #15 from the train station. Breakfast is included in high season.

Royal Crown Guest House 111 Crown St tel 01224/586461, www.royalcrown.co.uk. Comfortable, family-run guest house within walking distance of the station and Union Street. Non-smoking. £40-50.

Simpson's 59 Queen's Rd tel 01224/327777, address@simpsonshotel.com. Highly style-conscious, terracotta-coloured modern interior to this large granite terrace house, with an excellent brasserie and good weekend rates. £110-150.

Skene House Rosemount 96 Rosemount Viaduct tel 01224/645971, www.skene-house.co.uk. Serviced apartments with 1-3 rooms, all with TVs and microwaves. Good central location. £60-70.

Travelodge 9 Bridge St tel 01224/584555, www.travelodge.co.uk. Typically bland budget hotel - but you can't beat it for convenience, right on Union Street and minutes from the station. £40-60.
