Arbroath's helpful tourist office is at Market Place in the middle of town (June-Aug Mon-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm, Sun 10am-3pm; April, May & Sept Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-5pm; Oct-March Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-3pm; tel 01241/872609). Staff can recommend local walks and book accommodation. For somewhere to stay, it's hard to beat the isolation of the Auchmithie Hotel (tel 01241/873010; £50-60), perched on a cliff top four miles north in tiny Auchmithie, with a bar and restaurant staring out over the North Sea. Alternatively, try the Harbour House Guest House, 4 The Shore (tel 01241/878047; under £40), down by Arbroath's harbour, which is also where you'll find the best restaurants and pubs. The Old Brewhouse (tel 01241/879945) is a convivial and moderately priced restaurant-cum-pub by the harbour wall at the end of High Street.
