Practicalities

Montrose tourist office is squeezed into a former public toilet next to the library, at the point where Bridge Street merges into the lower end of High Street (July & Aug Mon-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm; April-June & Sept Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; tel 01674/672000). Most buses stop in the High Street, while the train station lies a block back on Western Road. For B&B accommodation, try Oaklands, over the river bridge at 10 Rossie Island Rd (tel 01674/672018, www.nebsnow.com/oaklands; under £40), or Kirkside (tel 01674/830780; £40-50), an isolated converted fishing bothy situated on the edge of the sand dunes by St Cyrus Nature Reserve, just over two miles north of Montrose at the mouth of the North Esk River. For eating, the liveliest place in town is unquestionably Roo's Leap, a sports bar and restaurant by the golf club off the northern end of Traill Drive, with an unlikely, but excellent, mix of Scottish, American and Australian cuisine.
