-> SkyeTransport practicalities
Most visitors still reach Skye from Kyle of Lochalsh, linked with Inverness by train; frequent buses use the controversially expensive Skye Bridge to reach Kyleakin, on the western tip of the island. The more scenic approach is from the ferry port of Mallaig, further south, crossing to Armadale on the gentle southern slopes of the Sleat peninsula. A third option is the privately operated summer-only car ferry which leaves the mainland at Glenelg, south of Kyle of Lochalsh, to arrive at Kylerhea, between Armadale and Kyleakin. Most visitors arrive by car, as the bus services, while adequate between the villages, peter out in the more remote areas, and virtually close down on Sundays.
