Transport practicalities
British Regional Airlines and Loganair operate fast and frequent flights (not Sun) from Glasgow and Inverness to Stornoway on Lewis, and Barra and Benbecula on North Uist. But be warned: the weather conditions on the islands are notoriously changeable, making flights prone to both delay and stomach-churning bumpiness. On Barra, the other complication is that you land on the beach, so the timetable is adjusted with the tides. CalMac car ferries run from Ullapool to Stornoway (not Sun); from Uig on Skye to Tarbert and Lochmaddy (not Sun); and from Oban and Mallaig to South Uist and Barra (daily). There's also an inter-island ferry from Leverburgh on Harris to Otternish on North Uist, and between South Uist and Barra.
