Yards away on Murray's Green is the tourist office (July & Aug Mon-Fri 9am-8.30pm, Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 10am-7pm; June & Sept Mon-Sat 9.30am-6pm, Sun noon-4pm; April, May & Oct Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun noon-4pm; Nov-March Mon-Fri 10am-4pm; tel 01835/863170).
For accommodation, try Meadhon House, 48 Castlegate (tel 01835/862504; £40-50), which has a conservatory round the back overlooking a lovely garden. Another great choice is Hundalee House (tel 01835/863011, www.accommodation-scotland.org; March-Oct; £40-50), a seventeenth-century mansion house in open grounds, a mile south of town on the A68. Of the two campsites nearby, the Jedwater Caravan Park (tel 01835/840219; March-Oct) is cheaper and more secluded, in a pleasant riverside site four miles south of town on the A68.
The best place to eat is Simply Scottish, 6-8 High St (tel 01835/864696), a smart but relaxed bistro-style café-restaurant, serving inexpensive Scottish meals, as well as pasta dishes, baked potatoes and the usual snacks.
