The cottage dates back to 1750 and has been thoroughly modernised and refurbished to a high standard throughout. Inside, the charming sitting room is the heart of the house with a wood-burning stove that keeps it cosy and a telescope set up at the window so you can keep an eye out for the plentiful local wildlife. You will often see mallard and eider ducks, oystercatchers and gannets, as well as otters and a number of grey seals. You may even be lucky enough to spot a golden eagle!
The light and bright kitchen with its snazzy tiling leads through to an attractive dining room which is a great place to gather for evening meals or breakfasts spent planning the day’s activities.
The cottage is laid out all on one level with a spacious and inviting double bedroom, a neat twin room and a contemporary shower room with a large corner shower.
The rough grass grounds behind the house lead off into the hillside beyond and, to the front, is a gravelled area with seating that is perfectly positioned for admiring the loch. There is fishing almost straight from the door with plentiful mackerel, sea trout, grey mullet, cod, pollock and hake for those who know how to catch them! Few places allow you to stay so close to the water and the sheltered bay protects the cottage from the loch coming in too far.
If you enjoy kayaking, canoeing, hill walking or just relaxing in a beautiful environment, Tigh Na Clachan is the perfect place for you.
Please note: The cottage is accessed via a narrow footbridge (three steps) that is shared with the two neighbouring houses, with parking 50 metres away and luggage having to be carried from the parking area so it is not suitable for those with limited mobility.
Tigh Na Clachan sits at the head of the Rosneath Peninsula, commonly known as ‘The Green Isle’ due to its dense woodland, which can be easily explored on two wheels via a circular route that goes all the way around the peninsula (cycle hire available in Helensburgh).
The nearby village of Garelochhead (2 miles) has some shops and a pub and Helensburgh (9.5 miles) is the place to stock up on supermarket shopping. If a day in the city beckons you can be in Glasgow within the hour by car or by train from Helensburgh in just 45 minutes.
Loch Long is known as a great spot for diving, with a range of sites to choose from and plenty to discover including some old torpedoes and numerous ship wrecks from WWII. Just north of Garelochhead is a particularly good site where the wreckage of an old pier has formed an artificial reef for a variety of marine life including shrimps, crabs, lobsters and anemones.
It is only half an hour’s drive north to the Rest and Be Thankful pass near Arrochar. This mountain pass was used for driving cattle to market and the drover (and probably the cattle) would ‘rest and be thankful’ that they had reached the highest point of their journey. Today the viewpoint on the pass is a great place to stop and take in the wonderful outlook out across Glen Croe. The ‘Arrochar Alps’ are less than 30 minutes’ drive away and there is also easy access north to Oban and Fort William, via Glencoe, where there is extensive stunning hill walking.
The Rosneath Peninsula Highland Gathering has been held in Rosneath (7.5 miles) every year since 1979 (usually in July). This traditional event involves pipe music, Highland dancing and track and field events, as well as the well known ‘heavy events’ such as tossing the caber and tug of war.
Tigh Na Clachan is just on the edge of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park that has lots of activities on offer including walking, climbing, mountain biking, watersports and several Munros to ‘bag’. For a real challenge you could even tackle imposing Ben Lomond for some absolutely stunning panoramic views that are simply inimitable.
