The lodge is set just inside the gates to Bolfracks House, off the A827 and at the side of the private drive leading up to Bolfracks House. It faces across the river to a lovely vista of hills and woodlands and is backed by the 4,000 beautiful acres of this privately-owned country Estate which tenants are welcome to roam in at will.
In the old days, it would have housed an estate worker and probably his family, perhaps a Ghillie or a gate keeper who would monitor the comings and goings to the Big House up the hill. It is certainly unlikely that he would have enjoyed the comforts that the cottage offers now, which have been sympathetically achieved with no sacrifice of the cottage’s traditional character.
Inside, the cosy living room with its open fire is comfortably furnished and decorated in restful colours - a delightful place to which to return to after a day in the open air. The kitchen is modern and well-equipped, as well as being light and airy.
All on one level the double bedroom is quite charming and the recently installed bathroom is, in terms of space and style, very superior to what is often the case in cottages of this size and vintage. The extra cloakroom/utility room at the back is another welcome addition.
Outside, there is a small garden (with furniture/BBQ) from which to explore the wonderful countryside round about, with its innumerable attractions.
Guests can enjoy free trout fishing on the estate and also have two days free use of Aberfeldy's leisure centre (swimming pool), as well as reduced green-fees at Kenmore Golf Course.
The gardens at Bolfracks House are open to the public from April to the end of October. On Loch Tay (3 miles), there are excellent facilities for water sports, or you can visit the Crannog Centre, the Iron Age stilt house in the loch. At the end of the loch is the village of Killin and the spectacular Falls of Dochart.
Aberfeldy (3 miles) is a bustling little town with interesting shops and good eating places. It also has a distillery that offers tours. The Watermill is a unique combination of a bookshop, gallery and café all in one and Spirit of Wood, up the hill from there, provides another unique shopping experience. In addition to its fame as a fishing river, the Tay just east of Aberfeldy at Grandtully is a favourite kayaking and white water rafting venue.
The little village of Fortingall is also worth a visit. It is said to be the birthplace (one of the many) of Pontius Pilate, and the yew in its churchyard is over 4,000 years old!
From there, you can go over the hill to Loch Tummel and admire the Queen's View. Pitlochry, with its fish ladder and famous theatre, not to mention its distillery, excellent shops and hotels is 16 miles away, while hill walkers and climbers will enjoy the challenges of nearby Ben Vrackie and Schiehallion.
