A true ‘one of a kind’ retreat is The Old Furnace that is set within the impressive Keathbank Mill right alongside the beautiful River Ericht, in the market town of Blairgowrie and Rattray in Perthshire.

The A-listed mill building dates back to 1864-5 when it harnessed the power of the river to spin flax and jute with the help of a huge water wheel (the largest in Scotland at the time) and a massive steam engine.
From the parking area a short path leads through to the front door that sits in the original mill chimney and from there are steps down to the cosy living area that has the sitting room on one side and the kitchen on the other.
The L-shaped sitting room is warm and inviting and the well-equipped kitchen has a dining area set up by the window for admiring the river whilst eating and trying to spot salmon leaping. Sliding doors from both the kitchen and sitting room provide access out to a pretty terrace (with seating) and there is a handy downstairs WC with laundry facilities.
Heading upstairs the double bedroom is spacious and bright with a lovely king-size bed to stretch out on. There is the option of using the unusual hexagonal rainfall shower up the stairs from the bedroom or the adjoining bathroom that has a bath and shower over. From the bedroom doors open out to a little Juliet balcony that overlooks the river so the sound of the water can be enjoyed from the comfort of bed.
Private parking for up to two cars is available and an enclosed gravelled garden area wraps around the chimney to the side of the terrace.
It is a short drive to the centre of Blairgowrie (1 mile), or Blair as it is known locally, where a selection of supermarkets and smaller independent shops can provide all necessary supplies. The path through the woods along the riverside makes for a very picturesque alternative route if you are on foot.
Permits for trout and salmon fishing on the river are available and walkers can follow the Cateran Trail out to Bridge of Cally (6 miles) with a pitstop at the hotel restaurant there along the way. For something to really remember, take a trip out to the Bowland Trails (6 miles) for an exhilarating Siberian Husky sled ride through the beautiful surrounding countryside!
Based within Blairgowrie’s library is a Geneology Centre where local family history connections can be researched and history enthusiasts will also enjoy visiting the Meigle Museum (8.5 miles) where there are 27 fascinating Pictish carved stones on display.
Just south of the town the Blairgowrie Golf Club has three golf courses to choose from – two 18 hole courses and the less challenging, 9-hole Wee Course. Glenshee (24 miles) is in easy reach for snowsports and various watersports can be tried out at Outdoor Explore in Alyth (6 miles).
It is only half an hour’s drive to the bustling cities of Dundee or Perth for more serious shopping or some sightseeing.

'Beautiful, tranquil setting. We enjoyed being able to leave the car and walk from the house. Being able to eat on the balcony whilst listening to the river and soaking up the sun was fantastic.'
'We have both enjoyed our stay in your very tastefully furnished house. The position is lovely overlooking the river, the town has everything you need.'
'Watching the character of the river change was mesmerising with a flash of an otter on the sand bank opposite. The hermitage walks are all great - our 13 year old border terrier kept up!'
