Inside the cottage’s bright and spacious sitting room is a great place to gather in the evenings and catch up on the day’s events whilst appreciating the warming wood-burning stove. There is a colourful dining area to the rear of the room and a further dining area in the well-equipped kitchen.
The large kitchen has been kitted out well for those who love to cook with the choice of a traditional Aga and the option of an electric hob and oven – both of which are ideal for whipping up some culinary delights. There is also a WC on this level where the washing machine is hidden away and a handy boot room for storing coats and boots, etc.
Upstairs the three attractive double bedrooms have the advantage of each having their own en suite bath/shower rooms, in effect creating individual suites that are particularly suited for couples holidaying together.
Outside is a gravelled seating area where you can enjoy some al fresco dining and steps leading down to the rest of the extensive enclosed garden that is laid mainly to grass. It stretches down towards a gate at the end which leads out to the Clunie Water river. The river is fast flowing so care should be taken, particularly with children, but it is a beautiful spot to stop and admire the view.
Braemar has lots to offer for a small village and most of its amenities are in easy walking distance of the cottage. It is lovely to wander around the selection of interesting little shops and there are several different eateries if you fancy a break from cooking.
You can pick up provisions from the small supermarket/PO and butcher in the village, but Ballater (17 miles) is the place for really stocking up on supplies. It is also the starting point for several mountain biking trails.
Braemar is set right at the heart of the Cairngorms National Park with plenty to discover in the rest of the park – it is the largest national park in the whole of the UK after all! Keep an eye out for wildlife including ospreys, pine martens and red squirrels, or try walking, climbing, riding or watersports to name but a few activities.
Cycle hire is available in Braemar if you fancy exploring on two wheels and they offer ski equipment hire as well if a trip to the ski resort at Glenshee (9 miles) is on your holiday agenda.
This is very much castle country, with the fascinating ruins of Kindrochit Castle still standing in the village and just on the outskirts is Braemar Castle, which you can walk around whilst listening to an audio tour on its history, or take a guided tour with a knowledgeable local volunteer.
The Queen’s own Scottish holiday residence of Balmoral Castle is just 15 minutes’ drive away and is open to the public in the summer months. The Queen returns to the area every September for the annual Braemar Gathering where she joins the many visitors who flood in to see the traditional Scottish music, dancing and Highland Games.
The famous River Dee is just half a mile away and fishing permits can be purchased from the Braemar Tourist Information Centre.
