It is 4 miles from Strathdon and 43 miles from Aberdeen, within the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. Well off the road and on a private track (steep but tarmacked), it offers a peaceful, secluded and scenic retreat for a relaxing holiday.
Inside the cottage is spacious, cosy and beautifully furnished. The sitting room is bright and elegant and holds the promise of cosy evenings in after a day out in the open air. There is plenty of comfortable seating and a cosy wood-burning stove in a traditional exposed stone fireplace that supplements the oil-fired central heating. The very well-appointed dining kitchen is large and welcoming with all appliances and plenty of space for both cooking and eating.
All on one level there are two bedrooms, a double and a twin. The double bedroom is bright and inviting with a king-size bed. The twin room has an original cast iron fireplace and zip-link beds that can be joined together to make another king-size bed. There is an additional dressing room with a sofa and extensive storage that provides a further touch of luxury and a modern bathroom that has a bath with shower over.
There are two porches, one to the front that is useful for shedding muddy boots and rainwear and the other to the side of the house, that has been set up as a most attractive alternative dining area.
Outside, there are patio areas to the front and rear, as well as grassed gardens and ample space for parking.
The walking from the cottage is really wonderful, of all gradients and levels of difficulty and enthusiasts will be reaching for their boots as soon as they settle in.
Ben Newe and The Buck are nearby, or you can walk all day along the ridge to the Lecht. From here, it is but a short car journey to famous Royal Deeside, which you join either at Ballater (21 miles, with all facilities) or to the east at Dinnet (with a hotel), passing the RSPB reserve at Loch Kinord and an Outward Bound adventure centre on the way.
In the other direction, you can take what is literally the 'high road' from Cockbridge to Tomintoul where you can join a spur of the Speyside Way and where you also will find yourself on the whisky trail.
The area has a number of castles and stately homes which are open to the public. The nearest are probably Corgarff and Kildrummy Castles, while a bit further on are the National Trust properties at Craigievar Castle and Leith Hall. Of course, there is also the Queen's summer residence at Balmoral (24 miles).
For more energetic pursuits, you are just 15 miles from the Lecht ski area. There is good walking straight from the door in the Ladder Hills which are close by, while just beyond are the mighty Grampians and Cairngorms. Shooting and fishing are available locally and permits can be obtained. There is also an abundance of bird life in the area, so ornithologists will be well catered for.
A day trip to the sunny, sandy beaches of the Moray Coast is perfectly feasible, as is a visit to the Granite City of Aberdeen. The nearest shop is four miles away and the nearest pub is three miles.
