Overview

Saoirse means freedom which is apt as that is the overriding feeling on arriving into Gardenstown with its relaxed pace of life. Immediately on stepping through the door the wonderful outlook across the rooftops to the sea from the porch provides a very warm welcome to what feels like a real home from home.

A welcoming atmosphere pervades throughout the house with thoughtful touches that highlight the splendid seaside location which can particularly be enjoyed from the conservatory that sits off the sitting room with its inviting wood-burning stove. The garden that is accessed from the conservatory is filled with lush planting and vibrant wild flowers with a sheltered seating area to admire it all from. A traditional beamed ceiling can be found in the kitchen/dining room where there is such a good view on show from the sink that there may be arguments over whose turn it is to wash up!

Steep stairs lead up to the two double bedrooms, one of which is en suite and the other comes with the extra special addition of a gorgeous, free-standing rolltop bath in the bedroom itself. Doors from the snug between the bedrooms open onto a lovely decked dining area where long evenings can be relished.

As the garden is set into the hillside it has several different levels that are connected by steps and paths so it may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. Informal street parking is available by the front door and it is only a short walk into the centre of the village.

Map & Local

Certainly the first priority after unpacking is to wander down to the amazing sandy beach of Gamrie Bay to fully immerse oneself into the gorgeous surroundings with the soothing sound of waves lapping on the shore. A path leads around the bottom of the cliffs to Crovie, another of the nearby little fishing villages, with great views looking back towards Gardenstown.

The village shop is very well stocked and the friendly local pub serves great food with a takeaway option so food can be picked up to take back to the cottage or eat on the beach, how idyllic! A scenic walk leads along the harbourside where dolphins can often be spotted swimming out in the water or, for a closer look, jump onto one of the sightseeing boat trips that run around the bay.

There are lots of challenging golf courses dotted along this coastline at Rosehearty (12.5 miles), Fraserburgh (16.5 miles) and MacDuff (8 miles) to name but a few. Duff House in MacDuff is a glorious Georgian mansion house that was designed by the famous William Adam back in the 1700s and is still in amazing condition to this day with guided tours on offer to fully explain its fascinating history.

Mountain bikers can have a go at the Moray Monster trails near Fochabers (34.5 miles) where unusually named trails such as Gordzilla, The Haggis and The Soup Dragon can be tackled and a skills area allows for a bit of practise first.

A day’s shopping or sightseeing in the city is easily achievable as the ‘Granite City’ of Aberdeen is only just over an hour’s drive away where galleries and museums can be explored as well as trying out numerous pubs and eateries.
