Woodlands Cottage is a delightful 'Hansel and Gretel' cottage tucked away in the middle of bluebell woods just one mile from the village of Invermoriston (with shop and hotel).

It is ten miles south of Drumnadrochit (with shop, pub and Monster Museum) on the west side of Loch Ness in Inverness-shire. Over 100 years old, it stands alone within its two private acres of natural woodlands which stretch down to the banks of the River Moriston (fishing licences available). It is a cosy, former croft-cottage that is ideal for visitors who like to be on their own in beautiful surroundings yet still within an easy distance of a pub, hotel and shop.
Inside, guests will have a taste of traditional Highland living, in conjunction with all 21st century comforts including electric central heating. Nothing could be cosier or more inviting than the sitting room with its impressive exposed stone wall with inset mantel around the lovely open fire that just begs to be curled up in front of. There is also an airy conservatory/porch from which to admire the surrounding countryside.
The large dining kitchen is completely wood panelled with open shelves giving it a charmingly rustic feel. In the light and bright bathroom there is the choice of a bath with a shower over.
Upstairs are the two attractive double bedrooms that have coombed ceilings and dormer windows for taking in the views.
Outside, is a large grassed garden area (with furniture). Children will love the freedom of the woods and the normally shallow River Moriston which gurgles peacefully between rocks and tiny islets down to Loch Ness. Parents are warned though that the riverbank is unfenced and that the river can rise in wet weather, so care should be taken.
Nothing is likely to disturb the peace at the cottage, but the sound of the river and the many birds which frequent this idyllic spot. It is possible too that shy deer may be spotted trotting across the lawn in the early morning or at dusk.
Tempting though it is to stay put, at only 30 minutes drive from Inverness and 45 minutes from Ben Nevis and Fort William, this is a good centre from which to get out and explore the West Coast, Moray Firth and Skye.
Loch Ness, Scotland’s longest and arguably most famous loch, is just down the road. From Drumnadrochit on its shores it is possible to take boat trips to spy the elusive monster and also go pony trekking in the surrounding hills. Guests can walk the Great Glen Way, which passes through Invermoriston, or cycle the Great Glen Cycleway. Urquhart Castle, the iconic ruin above the loch near Drumnadrochit, locally known as ‘Drum’, is also well worth a visit.
Those with an interest in wildlife and wonderful Highland scenery should not fail to visit two of Scotland’s loveliest glens, Glen Affric and Glen Cannich, both within 30 miles of the cottage. In the spring, at nearby Corrimony, the RSPB organise dawn excursions to a secret location to view the spectacular black grouse lek (competitive mating display). This is also golden eagle territory and it is always possible that a visit may be rewarded with a sighting of one of these magnificent birds.
Inverness, within a 30 minute drive, is the bustling capital of the Highlands, with a great range of shops, restaurants, and leisure activities, from theatres to swimming pools. Just to the north, by the Kessock Bridge, is a great place for viewing the dolphins which can often be seen playing in the narrows there. To the east is the haunting battlefield of Culloden, as well as the strategically placed and fascinating fortress and museum at Fort George, built after the ’45 Rebellion, which continues as an army barracks to this day.
