Inside it has been fully modernised and now offers warm, comfortable accommodation set in a convenient location for exploring the delights of Orkney. The inviting sitting room has a wood-effect fire and lovely views out towards Costa Hill and the sea beyond and the spacious, modern kitchen is the ideal place to gather for relaxed family meals.
The two attractive bedrooms, a double and a twin, are all on one level and both have built-in wardrobes providing useful storage. A contemporary family bathroom with a bath and shower over completes the indoor accommodation and is kept nice and toasty by underfloor heating.
Outside, off road parking is in the gravelled area right beside the door and once the gate is shut the grassed garden is fully enclosed so it is perfect for children and pets to run around and play in safely. You can see the sea off on the horizon from the garden and there is a shed that provides secure storage for bikes, etc.
The Orkney Isles are an archipelago made up of a total of 70 different islands. Most visitors travel over to the islands by ferry, although there is an international airport in Kirkwall. The ferry crossing from Scrabster in Caithness arrives into Stromness and takes about 90 minutes.
As it is so far north Orkney is one of the best places to see the impressive Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. They have previously been spotted right above the cottage, so in the right conditions you may well be lucky enough to witness this spectacular natural phenomenon.
Just 5 minutes’ walk along the road from the cottage is the Swannay Brewery where you can pick up some award-winning beers. Fishing is available on Loch of Swannay and bikes can be hired (in Stromness) for exploring the quiet roads around the island and admiring the expansive landscape, that is particularly noticeable due to the lack of trees.
The parish of Birsay (3 miles) has a tea room and a small PO/grocery shop selling local produce. There is also a lovely sandy beach where you can see the Birsay whalebone standing up on the cliff that is said to date way back to when a Baleen whale washed up on the shore in the 1870s.
If you are a history enthusiast you are spoilt for choice with historic sites to visit including Skara Brae Neolithic village (9 miles), the Ring of Brodgar stone circle (11.5 miles), the Standing Stones of Stenness (12.5 miles) and the Maeshow chambered cairn (13 miles).
Bird watchers flock to the islands as they are on the flight path of thousands of migrating birds and there are several RSPB sites to visit. The cliffs along the coastline are home to countless seabird colonies and you may even spot puffins or short eared owls on your travels.
Stromness (14 miles) is the nearest town where you will find a supermarket, swimming pool, golf course and an interesting museum detailing local history. Boat hire is available for sea fishing or for diving/snorkelling expeditions out to Scapa Flow where you can explore some of the fascinating WW1 ship wrecks. On the way to Stromness it is also well worth stopping to marvel at the substantial Yesnaby sea stack (11.5 miles).
The capital Kirkwall (19.5 miles) is a central hub for the ferry trips that run out to some of the outer islands of the archipelago – these are ideal for day trips as you can just jump on as a foot passenger (bikes go free).
