Ceol-Na-Mara Cottage is set in a pretty little row of houses looking out to sea just off the coastline in the charming village of Brora in south east Sutherland.

The cottage makes a good base for touring the area and is an easy 10 minute walk from a wonderful, long sandy beach that just begs to be explored.
Inside, the warm and inviting sitting room has an electric flame effect stove that keeps it nice and cosy and is a great place to warm up after days spent out sightseeing. The spacious dining kitchen is a lovely place to gather together for leisurely meals and there is also a handy door that leads directly out to the garden.
The three attractive bedrooms have been laid out upstairs to make the most of the sea views from the windows with a double, a twin and a neat single room on this level.
There is a grassed garden area behind the cottage with patio seating for al fresco dining or enjoying a drink in the evening. On the rocky shoreline a quick stroll away grey seals can often be spotted sitting, relaxing and enjoying the idyllic setting they share with you.
Brora’s award-winning beach is a real draw with its long stretch of sand and wildlife to look out for including seabirds, ducks, waders and even dolphins and minke whales out in the water.
The beach is a favourite spot for surfers and a very picturesque 18 hole links golf course backs right onto it with pretty sea views to admire whilst playing and a bistro to try out afterwards.
Fishing is available on the River Brora that flows down from Loch Brora and out to sea, effectively splitting the village in two, and you may even be lucky enough to spot otters playing on the banks.
It is just a short wander through the village to the small supermarket, eat-in curry house and the Royal Marine Hotel’s excellent restaurant that makes very good use of the fresh local seafood. You could perhaps treat yourself to one of their pampering spa days with swimming pool, sauna and steam room access.
Brora Heritage Centre (1 mile) displays interesting artefacts that have been found locally and offers an insight into the region’s industrial heritage. Just outside the village at the Clynelish Distillery whisky lovers will love taking a tour and sampling some drams.
No visit to the area would be complete without stopping off at for a tour of Dunrobin Castle (4.5 miles), an impressive residence with original furnishings and beautiful garden grounds that were inspired by the gardens at the Palace of Versailles in Paris. Be sure to time your visit to coincide with one of the daily falconry displays to see these fascinating birds of prey up close and learn more about them.
Mountain bikers will enjoy tackling the Highlands Wildcat Trails just outside Golspie (6 miles), where there are 18km of purpose built tracks of varying difficulties. The most ambitious trail leads up to the summit of Ben Bhraggie with a long descent back down that has some amazing views to take in along the way.
It is just over an hour’s drive up to Scrabster near Thurso from which ferries run over to the enchanting Orkney isles. The islands will be of particular interest to history enthusiasts as they are home to several interesting archaeological sites including Skara Brae, an intriguing, well preserved Neolithic settlement.
