Farr Croft Cottage is a detached, stonebuilt cottage set in an elevated coastal position designed to make the very most of its views, just 5 minutes’ walk from a gorgeous sandy beach in the tiny hamlet of Farr near Bettyhill (3 miles) in Sutherland.

This traditional holiday cottage, which was once a crofthouse, really makes the perfect base for exploring the area and, in particular, the wonderful beaches nearby.
An open fire in the sitting room supplements the oil central heating and keeps it nice and cosy, with comfortable seating to enjoy it from whilst planning activities for the rest of your stay. At the heart of the house is a large, modern kitchen with everything easily to hand for family meals at the charming dining area.
In the hall and staircase the natural wood has been retained and there is also a small sun porch at the entrance and a spacious shower room laid out under the stairs. The three bedrooms are all upstairs with a steep step up to the neat single bedroom from the staircase (care to be taken), an attractive double bedroom and a light and bright twin bedroom that you can see the sea from.
To the front of the cottage the enclosed sloping garden is great for children and dogs, with seating that has been set up for admiring the beautiful coastal views.
One of the first activities on the agenda will surely be to take the short walk down to the footpath that leads down to Farr beach which, despite its name, is in easy walking distance just half a mile away.
The beach is a delightful place to spend sunny days walking, beach combing, rock pooling or perhaps even windsurfing. As it is so far North it is possible, in the right conditions, to catch a glimpse of the stunning Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
Bettyhill (3 miles) also has a beach and the choice of either the Bettyhill Hotel or the Farr Bay Inn to eat at for a welcome break from cooking. At Melvich (12.5 miles) there is yet another lovely beach and the Halladale Inn that serves delicious meals and has a fine selection of whiskies to sample.
A very picturesque coastal drive (approx. 45 minutes) takes you east to Thurso (30 miles) for supermarket shopping or a visit to the Castle and Gardens of Mey. Along the way in Reay there is a pretty 18 hole links golf course that has wonderful sea vistas to admire whilst playing.
Get out and about by bike on the quiet roads around the cottage or try out the Borgie Glen Forest Road mountain bike trail (10.5 miles). Make sure to stop to see ‘The Unknown’, an interesting cast iron sculpture created by Scottish sculptor Kenny Hunter.
The blanket bog of the RSPB Forsinard Flows reserve (28 miles) is home to many birds including hen harriers, golden plovers, dippers and greenshanks. A boardwalk leads out across the marshland to a viewing tower which allows visitors to climb up for a real sense of the extent of this fascinating landscape.
