It is not often you find a sweet little cottage in an equally picturesque setting, but one such is the Honey House.

It stands in a quiet lane of traditional, terraced stone-built cottages just across from the river in the little Borders village of Longformacus at the foot of the Lammermuir hills, 7 miles from the market town of Duns.
Inside, the clever refurbishment of the cottage has added to its character and certainly given it the wow factor. For one thing, conventional layout has been inverted. Downstairs, the spacious hall makes an excellent store for muddy boots and outdoor clothes. Off this are a double and a single bedroom with additional pull-out bed and a shower room.
There are lots of attractive traditional features throughout, such as the natural pine doors with their metal latches. There are also thoughtful touches such as the blackout blinds in the bedrooms, just in case you don’t want to make too much of an early start.
Upstairs is a comfortable open plan living area, with wall-to-wall windows that overlook the garden and keeps the whole place light and bright. The room has been thoughtfully organised into three distinct areas. There is comfortable seating around a charming wood-burning stove at its heart, with a feature sandstone wall that provides plenty of rustic charm. The neat, well-equipped kitchen is separated from the rest of the room by a worktop (which includes the hob) and the dining area has a French window with Juliet balcony overlooking the garden.
Outside there is private parking to the front of the cottage and a pretty grassed garden to the rear.
For all its rustic peace and rural charm, Longformacus (pronounced Long-for-make-us) is very accessible and also very well placed for exploring this attractive area.
On the edge of the Lammermuir Hills and right on the Southern Upland Way, it is perfect for walking out in all directions. Picturesque Abbey St Bathans (with restaurant) is just a few miles up the road and you can continue from there to the coast at Cockburnspath, the fine sandy beach at Coldingham or the dramatic RSPB reserve on the cliffs at St Abbs.
Historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, which was punted back and forth between Scotland and England for much of its existence, is well worth a visit. You can then go on down the Northumbrian coast to Lindisfarne and Holy Island, Bamburgh and Alnwick (with castle and gardens).
Heading north, the bustling capital Edinburgh is only an hour’s drive away and you can be golfing at Luffness or even Muirfield itself within the hour. There are many other less prestigious but excellent courses in the nearer vicinity as well.
