This traditional fisherman’s cottage has been brought up-to-date whilst retaining much of its original character and charm. In the sitting room the wood-burning stove is certainly a welcoming sight after a day spent out exploring and breathing in the refreshing sea air.

The well-equipped kitchen has everything to hand for whipping up meals, with an informal breakfasting area and a dishwasher that takes care of the chore of washing up.

There is a modern shower room downstairs, while upstairs are the three attractive bedrooms, a double and a twin room with views out to sea and a neat single room.

Just stepping out of the door you can’t help but be impressed by the expansive views out across the harbour to the sea and cliffs beyond. There is parking just in front of the cottage and a little grassed seating area that overlooks the harbour. There is a steep drop to the front of this area so it is not suitable for young or adventurous children. Children should be supervised at all times.

Map & Local

It is just a short walk down to the little café in the harbour which is an excellent spot for lunch or afternoon tea, particularly for fans of seafood.

The rocky promontory of St Abbs Head that dominates the seascape was formed by volcanoes millions of years ago and is now home to a Nature Reserve with thousands of nesting seabirds. Circular coastal paths lead around the reserve with stunning views from the cliffs and razorbills, kittiwakes and guillemots to spot along the way. It is also worth bringing some binoculars to help spot seals and even minke whales out at sea.

There is a fantastic sandy beach at Coldingham Bay only half a mile’s walk away or 1.5 miles by car. If you fancy trying some watersports there is a shop in Coldingham with wetsuit, surf board, body board and kayak hire available. Further down the coast at Cocklawburn is a less well known but equally pretty stretch of sandy beach that is lovely to walk along and is great for children and dogs to run and play on.

After working up an appetite from a day on the beach, Eyemouth (5 miles) is just the place to stop for some award-winning fish and chips or excellent ice cream down by the harbour. Seals are often seen there and a feeding station has been set up so you can feed fish to them from a pole. Boat trips run out from the harbour for exploring the coastline further and the ‘fast blast’ trip is particularly fun, but perhaps not one for the faint hearted.

Berwick-upon-Tweed (14.5 miles) has plenty of shops, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants, as well a train station that links up with the east coast railway line.

It is well worth taking a trip over to Holy Island which is the end point of the St Cuthbert’s Way walking route and is where the famous Lindisfarne Mead, a fortified wine made with honey, is produced. Make sure to check the tide times before visiting as the causeway over the sands is only safely crossable at certain times of the day!
