On a back road, almost halfway between the small country town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders and Berwick-upon-Tweed on the Northumbrian coast, Easter Cottage faces the village green in the centre of the tiny village of Swinton.

Just 6 miles from the small town of Duns (which has a good range of local services), Swinton very conveniently boasts one of the best restaurants in the area which is highly regarded for both its food and its ale.
The traditional stone cottage, dating back to about 1800, is decorated in a simple, cosy decor that fits the style of the house. The sitting/dining room has a traditional beamed ceiling, cosy open fire and little dining area, as well as a tasteful plaid carpet that serves as a pleasant reminder to guests that, however near the Border, they are well and truly in Scotland!
The kitchen is well-equipped with everything to hand and there is also a bath with shower over and a handy separate WC. All on one level there is a snug double bedroom with an original feature fireplace that adds a further touch of character to the house.
Outside there is a lovely private, secluded grassed garden at the rear and a patio with BBQ and garden furniture. With parking for your car right at the door, this is an ideal cottage for a couple who either like to be private, or to meet the locals and not be too isolated.
Swinton has immediate access to all of the Scottish Border country and Northumbria, as well as the east coast between Edinburgh and Newcastle.
There really are limitless sightseeing and sporting opportunities available within this lovely area. To the south, the Cheviot Hills offer excellent walking, as do the Lammermuirs and the Southern Upland Way to the north.
The rivers Tweed, Till and Blackadder are great for fishing, while Duns and Kelso have golf courses and Kelso has a race course, ice skating rink and swimming pool as well. There are riding stables at Nenthorn near Kelso or, nearer still, at Cornhill just across the Tweed. While there, the picturesque little villages of Ford and Etal and the Heatherslaw Light Railway are well worth a visit, as is the historic battlefield of Flodden, just to the south of Coldstream.
Berwick-upon-Tweed is the nearest large town, offering all facilities and, having for centuries served as a ‘football’ kicked between England and Scotland, it has plenty of history as well, with its Hawksmoor-designed barracks and well-preserved Elizabethan ramparts.
Nowadays of course the border is a much more peaceful place and no stay in these parts would be complete without another foray into England to visit Holy Island and Lindisfarne (make sure you check tide times before setting out or your visit may last longer than you intended). The wonderful beaches and castle at Bamburgh should not be missed either.
The Scottish side of the border has lovely beaches too, notably at Coldingham, while nearby St Abbs is another pretty fishing village that is famous for its excellent diving conditions and for the amazing seabird colonies on the nearby cliffs. There are plenty of stately homes and castles within easy distance of the cottage, notably Paxton House, Manderston and Mellerstain. Guests at Easter Cottage certainly have no reason to be bored!
