The cottage is set in a peaceful rural spot but with easy access to local amenities and in a good position for exploring nearby towns and villages. At the heart of the house is the sitting room that has an electric stove to keep it nice and toasty with minimal effort.
Everything is easily to hand in the bright and airy dining kitchen that is perfect for eating together as the nominated cook doesn’t have to miss out on any of the fun. The kitchen is well equipped, with the inclusion of a boiling water tap for a quick cuppa. There is also a sunroom off the kitchen that catches the sun first thing, making it the ideal place for enjoying your morning tea or coffee.
The main bedroom is attractive and light with a lovely original decorative fireplace. The single bedroom is a cosy room with a lovely view out to the courtyard. A spacious wet room/ shower room (with the added advantage of underfloor heating) is adjacent to here, all on the one level.
Beyond the kitchen/ dining space is an external door to the patio area and garden. The outdoor seating looks over the highlight of East Faldonside, the magnificent garden. Regularly maintained and extremely well kept, it’s a delight to sit and watch nature pass by. Round the corner, another garden is the second hidden gem of the property and features a charming bench and swing.
Outside parking is right by the door, the gardens are enclosed and ideal for children to run around in, and there is an outbuilding where the laundry facilities are kept.
The owner’s house is alongside with extensive gardens that lead right down to the water where guests are welcome to enjoy riverside walks or fish directly from the riverbank (permit available via FishPal).
A walking trail leads along the banks of the River Tweed and through the woods to Abbotsford House (1 mile) where you can tour around the grand Scots Baronial home of Sir Walter Scott. There is also a café to stop at for lunch or afternoon tea, followed by a walk around the wonderful gardens that are particularly beautiful in the spring when the flowers burst into life. Scott’s View is also nearby, where you can gaze at the same Borders’ landscapes Walter Scott was encapsulated by.
Pop into Galashiels (2.5 miles) for shopping, a trip to the cinema or a meal in one of its many pubs and restaurants; try the Salmon Inn for a hearty meal and pint. Head over to Selkirk (3.5 miles) for a round on the picturesque 18-hole golf course. Try Tibbie’s restaurant, or for finer dining, Selkirk is home to the award-winning The Gordon Arms Restaurant.
Melrose (3.5 miles) is a charming little town to wander around with lots of interesting little shops selling everything from craft supplies, glassware and antiques to jewellery and clothing. There is also a good butcher, MacVicars of Melrose, excellent fresh produce shops and the bakery Twelve Triangles which is full of delicious treats.
Melrose is also home to one of four medieval Abbeys in the area, with the others at Dryburgh, Jedburgh and Kelso in close reach for visiting. Melrose Abbey was founded in 1136 and was the first Cistercian Abbey in Scotland that remains remarkably intact to this day. The Eildon Hills, which tower over the town of Melrose, make for a great day's hiking.
The train station at Tweedbank (2.5 miles) is only 5 minutes’ drive away, providing effortless access up to Edinburgh in under an hour. Edinburgh has a wealth of shops, pubs, restaurants and, of course, its iconic sights such as Edinburgh Castle, the Scott Monument and Arthur’s Seat that towers over the city off in the distance. Wherever you wish to go, a stay at East Faldonside has access to all kinds of adventures.
