Dating from the 1830s, this most attractive, spacious and comfortable traditional holiday home is full of character and has been beautifully modernised and refurbished to a high standard.
Inside, there is an ingenious and well-fitted galley kitchen, which for its size has plenty of storage and appliances, even down to a good Scots ‘pulley’ (a rack hanging from the ceiling for drying clothes). A few steps down take you to a spacious living room, which has a wood-burning stove to keep the place toasty and a dining area conveniently sited near the kitchen. With windows on three sides of the room it is bright and sunny all day long.
All on one level at the other end of the house are the two bedrooms, a double and a twin, both of which are very prettily decorated and furnished. The double bedroom is very large indeed and well able to cope with the king-size bed which it contains, the twin bedroom is light and bright and there is a family bathroom that completes the indoor accommodation.
Many guests comment favourably on how spacious the cottage is for its apparent size and even with a ‘full house’, there will be no chance of guests feeling cramped.
Outside the cottage has a sunny and quite private situation and it will be very tempting at every opportunity to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine in the pretty enclosed gravelled garden (with furniture). There is also is plenty of parking right at the door.
There are lovely walks to be enjoyed straight from the door in the surrounding countryside.
Here, you are also in the very centre of the lovely Border country, where there is far more to see and do than could possibly be achieved in the average holiday.
There is riding and an excellent golf course (one of many in the area), about 3 miles away at Ashkirk. The Southern Upland Way can be joined just north of Selkirk, while the world-class mountain biking centre at Glentress is within half an hour's drive. Selkirk also has a swimming pool and there is a leisure centre 10 miles away at Hawick.
The Border towns are full of charm and character and most have excellent eating places and interesting shops. Be sure to visit some of the local mill shops, for this area is the home of good knitwear and in particular cashmere.
There are lots of castles, keeps, ruined abbeys and stately homes in the local area, including Sir Walter Scott's own house at Abbotsford and in just over an hour you reach the Berwickshire coast with its lovely sandy beaches. Edinburgh is reachable for a day trip in just over an hour's drive, or 55 minutes by train from Tweedbank (11 miles). Buses also run regularly from Selkirk if the driver in the party fancies a day off.
