Overview

Tucked away along a private, tree-lined drive is Stables Cottage, a charming detached cottage that enjoys a tranquil rural setting within the beautiful Borthwickshiels Estate. It sits in a lovely woodland clearing at the head of the beautiful Borthwick valley, near Hawick in the Scottish Borders.

The cottage dates all the way back to the early 1700s and, as its name suggests, originally housed horses downstairs with their hay being kept above. Inside it has been transformed into comfortable and inviting holiday accommodation that is pet friendly. The seating in the pretty sitting room is placed around the wood-burning stove at its heart and the well-equipped kitchen also houses the dining table which is great for enjoying meals together.

A twin bedroom with an electric flame effect stove is downstairs along with an elegant bathroom with a bath and shower over and it is all kept cosy by oil central heating. Upstairs are two attractive double bedrooms – the master double that has a super king-size bed and handy dressing table and a second pretty double room that shares a modern family bathroom.

An enclosed grassed garden lies to the front of the cottage and a seating area with a little fire pit is laid out opposite that is the perfect place to sit and enjoy the sound of birds singing in the trees above. The single-track roads surrounding the house are ideal for cycling and bike storage is provided.

Stabling and grazing can be arranged for anyone wishing to bring their horse along and there is plenty of amazing hacking nearby. The owners’ family have lived in the house behind the cottage for over 100 years - they are available for queries but are happy to leave guests to enjoy the wonderful peaceful setting.

Map & Local

The pretty country estate extends to over 2,500 acres with walks out into the forest and rolling hills straight from the door and a delightful riot of colour in season as the rhododendrons burst into bloom. Wildlife can be seen all around with cheeky red squirrels, deer and hares just some of what can be spotted.

As well as road cycling nearby, there are walking routes and mountain biking trails in Craik Forest (8.5 miles). The two excellent mountain biking centres at Innerleithen (25 miles) and Glentress (29 miles) are both in easy reach, offering a variety of trails to suit different ages and abilities.

Hawick (6 miles) is the nearest place for shopping and eating out and it is very well catered for in terms of shops, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants. It is also home to The Borders Distillery that makes whisky, gin and vodka and offers interesting tours explaining the distillation process followed by a tasting session. They even provide the nominated driver with a wee dram to take home with them.

On the edge of the town at Wilton Lodge Park there are beautiful walks to be had along the riverside. If a trip a bit further afield is on the agenda, then it takes less than an hour by train from Galashiels (17 miles) to get up to the centre of the bustling capital city Edinburgh.

History enthusiasts will enjoy a trip out to Hermitage Castle (21 miles), a 13th century stronghold that even in semi-ruin is still very impressive and can be seen for miles around. A drive out to the very picturesque St Mary’s Loch (22.5 miles) is well worthwhile and further on is the Grey Mare’s Tail Nature Reserve (30 miles) that has a wonderful waterfall at its heart.
