Cosy comfort is the order of the day here and the fire that flickers away invitingly in the sitting room’s wood-burning stove simply invites guests to sit and relax in front of it. The modern kitchen is bright and airy with a charming outlook over the lush plants and shrubs in the cottage garden.
The spacious dining room is a great spot to linger over meals together and a family bathroom with a bath and shower over completes the downstairs accommodation.
This is an ideal spot for a romantic break with the relaxed double bedroom that takes up the whole of the upstairs having coombed ceilings, lots of storage space and lovely views out over open green fields from its roof windows. The stairs that lead upstairs have limited headroom in places so taller guests should take care.
Outside, a picnic table has been set up in the enclosed, sloping grassed garden looking out over the surrounding countryside and sheep wandering in the fields behind the house. Parking is just down the path from the house and there is a small stream that runs to the front of the garden. The cottage is set up quarter of a mile of farm track that is easily negotiable with care.
Trout or salmon fishing can be arranged on the Tweed, which is one of the best of Scotland's rivers, and there is plenty of walking straight off out into the surrounding hills and lanes.
Nearby Abbotsford House (1.75 miles) is sure to be first visit on the agenda. It was the home of Sir Walter Scott back in the early 1800s and today knowledgeable guides bring his memories back to life with fascinating tours. The house’s gorgeous gardens are set out in three ‘outdoor rooms’ that are enjoyable to wander around and admire the wonderful plants and flowers and there is a café to stop off at as well.
Galashiels (1 mile) has all the shops, pubs and eateries one could wish for with something to suit most tastes. The train link there allows for easy day trips up to the capital Edinburgh in under an hour’s journey, making it perfect for some shopping or sightseeing.
The Scottish Borders are dotted with interesting towns to visit including the market town of Kelso (17.5 miles) with its charming cobbled square and Jedburgh (16.5 miles) where the Castle Jail & Museum offers an interesting insight into life in jail in the 1800s.
Kelso and Jedburgh are also home to 12th century abbeys, two more of which can be found at Dryburgh and Melrose. History enthusiasts will love the walking and cycling routes that allow all four to be visited over a few days.
