Overview

This exquisite manor house has been the beloved family home of the Haig family for over 800 years and they have generously opened it up for guests to experience for themselves. The adventure begins on the approach where the sweeping driveway fully showcases the elegance and extent of the house. A hint of the treasures to be uncovered inside is given immediately on pulling back the sturdy wooden door to reveal the front hall where a fire crackling away in the wood-burning stove creates a welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of its past.

Bemersyde may take a little navigating at first but with something new to be discovered around every corner, it is a joy to wander around. Intriguing artwork lines the walls throughout as well as lots of interesting insights into the family’s remarkable history and ties to the well-known Haig Club Whisky with its distinctive blue bottle.

Everything needed has been provided in the main kitchen that is supplemented by a large larder and separate kitchens in the two wings. With two drawing rooms and a games room, there is certainly plenty of space to spread out into. Breakfast can be taken in the fittingly titled morning room that enjoys the sun streaming in each morning which makes for a delightful start to the day. In the evenings the refined dining room is the perfect setting for everyone to come together and catch up.

The bedrooms are spread out across the three floors and each have king-size or super king-size beds. There is also a handy single room and a dormitory bedroom (with four single beds) that children will adore. Each bedroom has a distinct theme so the choice can be made between the peach room, green room and pink room to name just a few. Discussion will be needed to agree who is lucky enough to get the fabulous tower bedroom with its romantic four-poster bed and wood-burning stove.

The East Wing is very well-equipped with its own entrance, kitchen, sitting room with open fire, shower room and the choice of two bedrooms, allowing some of the party to separate off and enjoy their own space and privacy if desired.

Gorgeous views from every room draw the eye out to the charming grounds, enticing guests to explore the huge garden with its imposing trees, one of which was aged at over 800 years old! Fresh vegetables are available from the garden by arrangement, along with jams, chutneys and soups all made from estate produce. The tennis court and croquet lawn can be tried out and there are scenic walks along the river banks where otters and osprey can be spotted, as well as the colourful flash of kingfishers darting by.

Bemersyde House invites guests to take a trip through its history and experience the splendour of its past and indeed its present.

Please note: Bemersyde is only able to accommodate a maximum of 16 adults within the main house so if your party is larger than that the higher pricing tier (that includes the use of the East Wing) will apply.

Map & Local

Extending to over 12,000 acres, the magnificent Bemersyde estate partly sits within a designated Area of Natural Beauty. Guests have access to a stretch of the sparkling River Tweed that is renowned for its salmon fishing and lessons can be taken with the knowledgeable ghillie in the hope of bagging some dinner.

The spectacular sight that Sir Walter Scott was so fond of can be found within the estate at Scott’s View where the meandering River Tweed is showcased against the magical backdrop of the Eildon hills that dominate the landscape for miles around. A short walk away, the striking William Wallace statue stands proudly at over 31 feet high again enjoying the vista of the three Eildon hills that can easily be climbed for even more amazing views.

Nearby Bemersyde Moss is a nature reserve and SSSI (site of special scientific interest) that is home to a wide variety of wildfowl who thrive amidst its marshy landscape.

Sir Walter Scott lived and penned many of his famous literary works at Abbotsford House (7.5 miles) which can be toured with one of their knowledgeable guides. He also spent time at and was inspired by Smailholm Tower (6 miles), a 15th century peel tower that is still remarkably intact, likely due to its hardy structure of volcanic rock and red sandstone atop a rocky outcrop. The tower now houses an interesting exhibition on Scott’s life.

If a round of golf appeals, the courses in St Boswells (3.5 miles) and Melrose (6 miles) both welcome visitors and, if mountain biking is on the agenda, the great 7stanes mountain biking centres at Innerleithen (23 miles) and Glentress (27 miles) are in easy reach with secure storage available for bikes at the house.

Excellent restaurants can also be found in St Boswells and Melrose for meals out and the nearby towns of Kelso (10 miles), Lauder (12 miles) and Jedburgh (12.5 miles) are in easy reach for further exploration. The surrounding area is steeped in history with sights to take in all around from 12th century abbeys to roman artefacts and stately homes such as Floors Castle and Bowhill House. For days in the city it is only a 50 minute train journey up to the centre of Edinburgh from Tweedbank (8 miles).
