Overview

Offering a true taste of rural life set against the charming backdrop of the peaceful Scottish Borders is Byreman’s Cottage, a traditional retreat on the Elliston Estate just 5 minutes’ drive from the village of St Boswells (2.5 miles).

A very warm welcome awaits immediately on arrival with the sitting room enticing guests to kick off their shoes and settle down in front of the open fire to toast their toes whilst watching a film of an evening. The farmhouse dinner table at the heart of the incredibly spacious kitchen is the perfect place to gather together for evening meals or a hearty fry up before the day’s adventures begin.

The attractive downstairs bedroom allows for extra flexibility as it can be configured as either a twin room, or the zip-link beds can be combined to create a king-size bed. From the upstairs bedrooms, a twin and a double (that are also reconfigurable), the dormer windows allow the surrounding countryside to be fully appreciated.

Plenty of space for parking is available in the shared courtyard by the front door and, an open garden lies to the rear of the cottage. As all that rolling countryside is right on the doorstep, packing the walking boots is an absolute essential in order to get out and experience nature.

Larger parties of guests can be accommodated for by also booking Byreman’s sister properties Coachman's Cottage (sleeping up to 8 additional people) further round the courtyard and Gardener’s Cottage which is just a short stroll away (sleeping 4).

Map & Local

Nearby Dryburgh Abbey (6 miles) is one of four fascinating Abbeys in the area with the others at Melrose (5.5 miles), Kelso (12.5 miles) and Jedburgh (13 miles) offering good reasons to visit these lovely local towns. Don’t forget to stop off along the way to see the nearby statue commemorating William Wallace and Scott’s View which was Sir Walter Scott’s favourite viewpoint.

Fishing enthusiasts will be pleased to get the opportunity to try out beats on the famous River Tweed where salmon and sea trout are amongst the fish that can be caught amidst some stunning scenery.

St Boswells (2.5 miles) has a hotel bar restaurant, an interesting café/bookshop and a deli stocked with tasty treats, as well as a butcher and small grocery shop. Children will love the animal sanctuary just outside St Boswells that is a great spot to stop off at to see the donkeys, llamas, pigs and ponies.

In Melrose (5.5 miles) there are a wealth of shops to wander around, as well as a good range of eateries to try for a meal out. Wonderful hill views can be taken in during a round of golf on the town’s 9-hole course that is very picturesque in its prime spot at the foot of the Eildon hills.

Melrose is also home to the famous Melrose Sevens rugby tournament that has been held in the village annually every April since 1883 and draws in spectators and players from all across the globe, bringing a real buzz to the town.

If a beach walk or some paddling is on the agenda it is merely an hour’s drive over to the Berwickshire coastline that is dotted with wonderful stretches of sand that just beg to be explored.
