Selkirk
Selkirk is a small town lying six miles south of Galashiels on the A7 on a terrace of hills above the Ettrick Water. It has a rich history and in the mid-1700s had a strong shoemaking industry, which provided 2,000 pairs of shoes for Bonnie Prince Charlie's army. From the 1800s onwards it was a thriving tweed mill town and today Locharron of Scotland carries on that tradition as the world's leading tartan manufacturer.

Lots to See and Do
Selkirk was originally a thriving tweed mill town although this industry is now much reduced. The main visitor attraction is Halliwell's House Museum (free entry, open April to October) which was built in 1712 and hosts exhibitions of local historical interest with an adjoining art gallery.
Sir Walter Scott's Court Room (where he was sheriff for over 30 years) displays an exhibition of his life and literary work and provides background information on Mungo Park, the local explorer and anti-slavery advocate who died in his attempt to find the River Niger.
The town has a fitness centre and tennis courts and each summer hundreds of riders take part in the Selkirk Common Riding, a 400 year old tradition that harks back to the Battle of Flodden. The Twist Glass Studio offers a range of contemporary glassware and Bowhill House is just 3 miles away. This historic house and country estate is open to the public (guided tours available) and even has an adventure playground in the woods that is sure to keep children amused.

26-Mar-2024 | The Black Barn DB7 (overall) | Got back to us quick when asked questions about stay
26-Mar-2024 | East Denwick Mill GA1 (overall) | We liked that the owner was available next door, but wasn't at all intrusive. He gave us information about the island when we asked for it. So just the right amount of support.
26-Mar-2024 | River Cottage at Old Melrose CN6 (overall) | We have stayed twice River Cottage and love both the cottage and surrounding countryside. When you arrive, there is a lovely hamper with homemade bread and marmalade, plus freshly laid eggs. The cottage is very clean, well-appointed and organised. The kitchen is great to cook in. We would recommend bringing a shower cap for the excellent overhead shower. The owners, who live next door, are very pleasant, welcoming and discreet. We hardly noticed them apart from the odd times when our paths crossed. The grounds are lovely for walking and have access to the river Tweed. In the local towns, there are some excellent small shops that are worth exploring, especially for food and books!
24-Mar-2024 | Am Bothan GM2 (overall) | Customer service team is very helpful and friendly. Overall service was excellent.
26-Mar-2024 | The Owl House GK2 (overall) | Easy to book, helpful.
23-Mar-2024 | Skylark Cottage CF1 (overall) | Booked our stay via Unique Cottages and was very satisfied with the service as everything went smoothly.
23-Mar-2024 | Coldwells Cottage EK5 (overall) | Professional service from booking to completion of holiday. Timely reminders and kept informed via email. The only aspect of Unique Cottages service that I don't like is the £150 compulsory cleaning deposit, other cottage holiday booking agencies do not have this charge.
26-Mar-2024 | Sea Cottage AA3 (overall) | We have used Unique Cottages several times and have been happy with the booking process and cottage descriptions.
26-Mar-2024 | Customs House GE5 (overall) | Excellent clean house |
