Situated just 5 miles north of St John's town of Dalry (with pub) and about 25 miles from Castle Douglas in south west Scotland, Blackwater Cottage has enormous charm.

This detached 200 year old stone cottage, with lovely views from every window, sits in a superb location amongst the hills and lochs of Galloway. It has been most pleasingly decorated and furnished by the owners for their own use, as well as for guests.
If the exterior of the cottage is beautifully presented and fresh, then the interior is just as appealing and welcoming. The cosy sitting room has a wood-burning stove to augment the efficient electric heating, while the dining kitchen is well kitted-out and very roomy with plenty of storage space.
Very tall guests should be aware that the upstairs bedrooms have steeply coombed ceilings, but despite this the principal bedroom has plenty of space. Having an additional WC on this floor is another added bonus.
The large garden has an expansive gravelled area which provides plenty of off-road parking and there is also a small terrace (with furniture) beside the house, which gives scope for picnic lunches or evening drinks to be enjoyed while watching the many visiting birds.
The cottage is situated above Loch Carsfad at the side of a very quiet back road that snakes up from St John's town of Dalry and New Galloway (with a great golf course said to have the best views in Scotland) to Carsphairn (9 miles) and the coast at Ayr (45 minutes drive).
You are surrounded by stunning hill and forest countryside here that is marvellous for walking and picnics, with the waterfalls of the shallow River Blackwater tumbling down at the rear through rocky pools into the loch.
The Southern Upland Way follows the line of the hills well to the east of the cottage and south of St John in Dalry there is Loch Ken and the Galloway Forest Park with watersports, fishing, birdwatching, mountain-biking, etc.
Those with even a passing interest in astronomy should bring their telescopes as the night sky here, far from any light pollution, is truly superb. The area is rich in history and such attractions as Caerlaverock Castle, Sweetheart Abbey, the Castle, House and magnificent gardens at Threave should not be missed. The Solway coast also offers a host of wonderful beaches.

Bed linen INCLUDED and towels are available to hire. The first £25 of electricity is INCLUDED with any additional usage payable by meter reading at the end of your stay. Heating is by electric storage heaters and wood-burning stove (one basket of logs INCLUDED). Water is from a private source which is UV filtered and regularly tested; however (as is typical in many parts of Scotland) it can become discoloured, particularly after heavy rainfall. Guests may therefore prefer to bring bottled water to drink. Sorry, pets are not accepted. No smoking.
