East Cliff Cottage
Portpatrick, near StranraerGuest Rating
On the west coast of the Rhinns of Galloway, right in the south west corner of Scotland and as far west as you can go without falling into the sea, is the pretty village of Portpatrick.

The village swarms up the cliffs above its little harbour (much beloved of sailors) and at the end of a little cul de sac on the cliff top is East Cliff Cottage. From the outside it looks like a neat, attractive but unexceptional whitewashed, semi-detached cottage, but in fact it is so much more.
Inside, the cosy sitting room has comfortable seating around its living flame fire and the large picture window keeps the room light and bright. Round the corner is the spacious, well-equipped kitchen with its panelled ceiling and doors out to the conservatory. It has all the appliances you could ask for and even has a dishwasher so you don’t have the chore of doing the dishes. You are on holiday after all!
The conservatory at the rear of the cottage has plenty of space for convenient dining, sitting out when it is not quite hot enough to be in the gardens and for children to play in.
All on one level there are three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin, that are all attractively furnished and of a good size. One of the double rooms has an en suite bathroom and with another family shower room as well it is unlikely that there will be long queues in the morning. Oil-fired central heating and double glazing ensure the house's cosiness all year round.
Outside there is a lovely, enclosed garden, with lawns, flower beds, a seating area (with furniture and BBQ) and glimpses of the sea.
The village centre and harbour, where there are shops, pubs and some excellent eating places, are within easy walking distance of the cottage.
Portpatrick is also at the beginning of the Southern Upland Way which traverses the South of Scotland and the first stages take you on a very scenic walk along the cliffs.
There are beaches at Sandhead and Port Logan, where you can also visit the gardens. Stranraer (with all facilities) is eight miles away, with Cairnryan just a little further, should you decide to take a day trip to Ireland.
Inland, you may visit Castle Kennedy, Glenluce Abbey or historic Whithorn or head north east to the Galloway Forest Park with its walking, cycling and sailing possibilities. If you have brought your golf clubs, you can be at famous Turnberry in about an hour, though there are many other less prestigious but excellent courses nearer to hand. In fact, Portpatrick itself has one of them.
Garden lovers can visit the Dunskey Estate with its woodland and walled gardens, which in spring have wonderful displays of snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells, with spectacular rhododendrons in later spring. There is horse riding a few miles away at Lochnaw. Fishermen will find that there are several companies offering to take sea anglers out from the harbour to try their hand at catching whiting, mackerel, plaice and skate. The village also has a pleasant beach.
