The house was originally the home of the Duke of Argyll’s Factor and has even been used as the island’s courthouse in the past. Inside, the large drawing room has comfortable seating with an open fire to snuggle up in front of and a separate sitting/play room provides extra space to spread out into. The large family kitchen has a traditional Aga for cooking and a large farmhouse table that is perfect for relaxed breakfasts and evening meals. There is also a utility/boot room and a handy downstairs twin bedroom (with disabled access) and a WC.

Upstairs there are six bedrooms in total, all of which are spacious and pleasantly presented. On the first floor there are three twin bedrooms, a double bedroom and three bathrooms that all have baths and separate showers. There is also a handy additional WC and up on the second floor are two further twin bedrooms.

A door from the main house leads through to a cosy little bothy that offers extra accommodation for up to 3 additional people, with two bedrooms, a shower room and its own living area. Outside, the house sits in its own enclosed garden (with furniture) which is the ideal spot from which to take in the glorious surrounding scenery and maybe even spot the family of otters that play on the loch’s shoreline.

You can get across to Tiree by ferry (vehicles and foot passengers) from Oban on the mainland, arriving into Scarinish (4.5 miles). The ferry can get quite busy, particularly at the weekend and as tickets must be pre-booked we recommend that you book your ferry tickets at the same time as you book your holiday (see Calmac Ferries website). You can also fly to the island from either Oban or Glasgow and car hire is available on the island.

Map & Local

Tiree’s roads are mainly single track with passing places to use when you meet oncoming cars. If you are enjoying a relaxed, scenic drive around the island they should also be used to pull into to let others past.

There is a general store in Crossapol (1.5 miles) and a small supermarket at Scarinish (4.5 miles) that you can stock up at on the way to the house. There is also a service that delivers groceries from the mainland right to your door, although they must be ordered well in advance. In July each year Crossapol bay plays host to the Tiree Music Festival, a contemporary folk music festival that has proved to be extremely popular over recent years, with tickets selling out fast.

The island is only 10 miles long and 3 miles wide and has quite a flat landscape so it is ideal for walking and cycling (bike hire available). The climate is influenced by the warm Gulf stream and as a result it enjoys amongst the highest number of hours of sunshine in the UK. Its 46 miles of coastline has plenty of magnificent long sandy beaches that just beg to be enjoyed.

Tiree is a mecca for wildlife with hundreds of species of birds to spot and seals, dolphins and even basking sharks to look out for off the coastline. Wildlife enthusiasts will also enjoy the Treshnish Isle Exhibition at the Hynish Centre (3 miles). The exhibition allows you to learn about this group of uninhabited islands (between Tiree and Mull) without disturbing the sensitive environment of the islands’ many thriving seabird colonies that include puffins, guillemots and razorbills.

The island’s situation means that the surrounding waters offer ideal conditions for watersports. There is a watersports centre at Gott Bay (8 miles) where you can try surfing, kite surfing and kayaking. It is also home to Tiree Wave Classic, an annual windsurfing competition that is held on the island every October and draws competitors and spectators from all over the UK.
