The house dates back to 1929 and has been in the same family ever since, known locally as Dun a Bhuilg, meaning ‘hill of the fairies’ - the hill the house stands beneath. It has been lovingly renovated whilst retaining lots of interesting original features throughout, such as the brass bell at the front door that was once used to call back children playing down on the beach.
The spacious sitting room has a wooden-beamed ceiling and is very light and bright due to its large sash windows. Comfortable seating is centred round a cosy open fire and there is a dining area alongside that is ideal for lingering family meals. Off the sitting room is a pantry with a useful serving hatch through from the kitchen.
The quarry-tiled kitchen is well-equipped and has plenty of traditional built-in storage and a large electric range cooker with gas hob. It even has a larder with original slate shelves and its own chimney that helps it stay cool. The raised dining area with gas stove is the perfect spot for informal breakfasts and there is also a door out to the garden. The useful WC and boot room has a handy drying rack and a man hole that used to be used to pour coal down to the boiler.
Upstairs on the first floor are three double bedrooms, a single bedroom, a bathroom with modern free-standing bath and a separate shower room. The bedrooms all have charming views out over the garden to the sea beyond and the Isle of Jura in the distance.
A spiral staircase leads you up to the top floor where there are two further large bedrooms that provide a touch of adventure with each having four original bunk beds (full size singles) that are set into the wall with ladders up to the top (not suitable for children under 9 years old). There is also a neat single bedroom and a shower room on this level.
Outside there is parking right by the door and an extensive enclosed garden (with furniture) that wraps all the way around the house – some 3 acres in total! It is a very intriguing garden with lots of different paths, woodland, a little burn and even a pond (care to be taken with children). There are wonderful views from the garden and an array of wildlife right on the doorstep. Deer are often seen wandering the grounds and sea eagles have even been spotted from the garden.
Across the road from the house are two secret paths which lead down to a delightful, secluded sandy beach that is usually totally deserted, one of four beaches that are within half an hour’s walk of the house.
Further north on the shore of Loch Sween are the impressive ruins of Castle Sween (2 miles), one of the earliest castles in the country that has some absolutely stunning views of the loch and plenty to explore and photograph.
A few miles before Crinan is the Scottish Beaver Trail, a conservation project that has reintroduced wild beavers back into Scotland, where you can try and spot the shy creatures on one of the wildlife walking trails. Crinan itself (15 miles) is a lovely little village with a famous seafood restaurant, a shop and a café. It sits at the western end of the famous Crinan Canal that comes up from Ardrishaig. You can fish, kayak or canoe on the canal, hire a bike or just relax on the banks and watch the boats negotiating the series of locks.
Boat trips run to the islands of Islay and Jura that are both famous for their whisky. Boat trips also go out to the Corryvreckan whirlpool, the third largest whirlpool in the world that has standing waves up to 10 feet high! There is a wildlife spotting trip where you can see seals, otters, golden eagles, sea eagles and even dolphins or, for an adrenalin rush, you can try the faster boat that goes right up close to the whirlpool.
Lochgilphead (18 miles) is the most convenient place to stock up on supermarket supplies and it also has a bank, PO and petrol station, as well as a range of interesting little independent shops. Oban (47 miles) has lots of shops, pubs and restaurants and is also home to the Scottish Sealife Sanctuary.
