It is hardly surprising that Loch Awe in Argyll is so beloved of visitors. Not only is it easily accessible (under two hours from Glasgow), it is a highly scenic stretch of water in its own right, with the iconic ruin of Kilchurn castle at its northern end.

It is also only a little more than a 45 minute drive from Scotland's glorious west coast, round Oban. On its eastern shore, amid two acres of private grounds to which guests have free access, is Burnside House, a truly superb conversion of an old stone barn.
It stands behind the 'big house' occupied only intermittently by other guests, with the owners' own holiday home, which is also used only occasionally, alongside. Apart from the main grounds, it has its own private woodland garden, with a decked balcony to the rear and a balcony to the front, both of which are accessed from the living area. There is also a conservatory/summer house, furnished with additional seating that is perfect for relaxing in whatever the weather. There is also parking right at the door.
The owner likes a project and Burnside House is the amazing result of his inspiration. Downstairs are a twin bedroom, a double bedroom (with en suite shower) and a games room with a pool table and bar (beer not included)! Just outside is a laundry room with deep freeze which also provides secure storage for sporting equipment.
Upstairs, there is a superb open plan living area which extends the length of the house. At one end is an original exposed stone wall and wood-burning stove to supplement the oil central heating, with stone pillars and beams to give it even more character. Also on this level are a further bedroom and bathroom. All of the rooms are furnished to the highest of standards.
Loch Awe is famous for its fishing and permits are available, while walking, riding and sailing are other popular pastimes.
The Sonachan Hotel is just a mile up the road and there are shops at Inveraray and Lochawe village, about 12 miles from the house.
During a stay at Burnside House it is quite possible to catch the boat at Oban for interesting day trips to Mull, Staffa, Iona and some of the other neighbouring islands.
There is a lovely sandy beach at Benderloch and the SeaLife centre at Barcaldine, just a further ten minutes up the road, makes for another excellent day out for all the family. Nearer still, on the north side of Loch Awe itself, is the Visitor Centre at Cruachan, where you can go into the mountain and see the hydro-electric power station built right inside its heart.
Oban offers all the facilities which one would expect from a popular resort town. However you decide to spend the day, it will always be a delight to return to the peace and comfort of Burnside House.
