Overview

A stay at Marvig Cottage, 29 miles from the capital of Stornoway on Lewis, will ensure that visitors have a comfortable base from which to explore and enjoy the many attractions of this unique landscape.

The detached, modern cottage stands quite alone in its own fenced garden and has a commanding position high above the loch, with superb views over the water and out to sea. The immediate area is known as South Lochs and is well named indeed, for the land is dotted with over 200 small fresh and saltwater lochs, which offer excellent fishing.

The house is most attractively furnished, with the benefit of two separate sitting rooms, one with an open fire and a most interesting fireplace wall and the other with a piano. Larger groups or different generations have plenty of room to spread out and 'do their own thing' as both sitting rooms have TVs.

The well-fitted and equipped kitchen has a large dining table and there is plenty of space for the cook(s) to work, whilst still being able to join in the chat. Having one double bedroom and a bathroom with separate walk-in shower downstairs makes the house suitable for guests with limited mobility.

Upstairs there are three more bedrooms, a double and two single rooms that are bright and colourful with coombed ceilings and plenty of light coming in from the Velux roof windows. Oil central heating and double glazing ensure year-round comfort.

Map & Local

The Isle of Lewis has been settled for thousands of years and has a really fascinating history.

The Standing Stones at Callanish and the Carolway Broch (both about 30 miles) bear witness to its prehistoric settlers, while the Ravenspoint Visitor Centre at Kershader (9 miles) provides insights into a more recent past - the tragic Clearances of the last centuries and crofting through the ages. Walks along the stunning coastline will reveal more historical and scenic delights.

The island is a birdwatcher's paradise and offers the chance to see golden eagles, white-tailed eagles and red and black-throated divers. On land, visitors can expect to see deer, otters and mountain hares, while the surrounding seas are equally rich in wildlife. Boat trips give the opportunity to see seals, dolphins, porpoises, sharks and whales.

To the south, Lewis merges into Harris - they are all one island - which has a more mountainous landscape and some magnificent beaches, where the azure waters of the Atlantic lap miles of silver sands. It is certainly worth the longer drive to explore this part and perhaps take home a memento in the form of a length of genuine Harris tweed.

Stornoway (27 miles), the capital, is a busy port and the most likely arrival point for visitors. It has all facilities, including a golf course and it is probably worth stocking up with provisions from the supermarket there on arrival.

Please note: while we make every effort to be as accurate as possible, the actual position of the cottage indicated on the map above and the proximity of the amenities in the Local Info section cannot be guaranteed to be precise and should be used as a guide only.
