Overview

Achleek Cottage occupies a glorious position on the Laudale estate on the south side of Loch Sunart, with wonderful views down the loch and across to the mountains of Moidart and Sunart on the other side.

The cottage was originally a tackman's house that has been refurbished to a very high standard. It is the cosiest and most welcoming of houses, which seems to fold itself round you as you enter.

The sitting room is light and bright with extensive comfortable seating and a warming open fire, in an impressive surround, that makes guests feel instantly at home. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped with appliances. Its size means there is plenty of room for the dining table in the centre. Also on this level is a useful drying area and equally handy WC.

Upstairs are three bedrooms, two doubles and a twin room. The master double bedroom has wonderful views over the loch and a large en suite bathroom. The arrangement of the other bedrooms is an interesting one with the comfortable and spacious twin having a connecting door to the second shower room, which it shares with the second small double bedroom. In terms both of situation and comfort, Achleek really is a hard act to follow.

Map & Local

It is an area rich in atmosphere and history. This was the heartland of Jacobite support for Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 and it retains its air of haunting romance to this day.

There are few roads in the area (but lots of wonderful walking) and still less in the way of human settlements. The nearest and only village of any size is peaceful Strontian (3 miles, with shops, hotels and a restaurant), which is grouped around a green. In 1722, its lead mines, now long gone, yielded the first traces of the element strontium and gave the village its name.

From there, you can drive on to the very end of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the westernmost tip of mainland Britain (with lighthouse), with its glorious beach at Sanna (36 miles) and boat trips from Kilchoan. However, if you do suffer from withdrawal symptoms for a bit of urban bustle and a supermarket, Fort William (with all facilities, a golf course and a leisure centre) is only 23 miles away by the Corran Ferry.

Glencoe, another haunting and sombre spot, is also 23 miles away by this route and offers many famous walks and climbs. To the north west, Arisaig (40 miles), in addition to its legendary silver sands, has a beautiful golf course above the shore.

Continuing past the house to the south west down Gleann Geal, you come to Lochaline (17 miles) where a little car ferry plies across to Fishnish on Mull, so a day visit to Iona is perfectly feasible. Loch fishing and deerstalking may also be available in the area.
