Overview

The open plan living area has a corner made completely of glass, so you can enjoy the superb views, not to mention the legendary west coast sunsets, either from there or from the decking area outside. And why Boom House? It is named such because the point in front of the house once formed one end of the boom across the loch to prevent German submarines entering it in World War II. The foundations of the defence works can still be seen.

The living area is both stylish and practical. There are three bedrooms, two twins downstairs and one bathroom. Upstairs is a master double bedroom with en suite bathroom and TV room/office with a glass partition which looks down on to the main sitting room below.

It stands detached, in its own garden ground, above the shore on Loch Ewe, on the edge of the tiny scattered hamlet of Mellon Charles, near the end of the road. The shingle beach is right alongside, with access from the cottage, which does not, however, directly overlook it.

A modern, stunningly designed house that is beautifully furnished and equipped. It also has impeccable green credentials with solar panels, air source heat pump, underfloor heating, heat recovery system and the last word in insulation. In fact, it is one of the very few silver-rated houses in this area. Add the fact that it has lots of south facing windows and a wood-burning stove and the risk of being too warm is far greater than the opposite! Comfort is therefore assured.

Map & Local

Many guests will be happy to stay in this idyllic spot and recharge their batteries with strolls along the beach, keeping an eye out for the plentiful wildlife on land, sea and in sky, admiring the ever-changing seascape, or walking the surrounding hills or Laide Woods. Fishing can also be arranged locally.

No holiday in this part of the world, however, would be complete without a visit to the famous sub-tropical gardens at Inverewe, especially as they are, relatively speaking, on the doorstep. Gairloch has all facilities, including a golf course, pony trekking and wildlife cruises. Aultbea itself has two hotels, a general store, butchers and craft shops. The nearest sandy beach is at Mellon Udrigle, just across the little peninsula.

Further afield, there is also no shortage of places to explore. Beyond Gairloch, you can drive round to picturesque Badachro (with excellent hostelry) and on to the end of the road at Redpoint. From there, there is a superb cliff walk round to Diabaig, although a car at either end is probably recommended if you are doing the whole thing.

A rather longer, but nonetheless rewarding trip would be up to the bustling little fishing port of Ullapool and on to explore some of Scotland’s most iconic mountains, Stac Pollaidh, Ben More Coigach and Suilven. Everywhere you go, the scenery is quite stupendous and most likely your camera will never be in its case!
