Doesn't the name sound grand - but it is about as different from Westminster as you could imagine! Parliament House was named after the nearby rock where historically the village elders met to discuss community matters.

Overview

It is set beside the shore, with its own stony beach, near Achiltibuie and overlooking the Summer Isles, north Skye and the Hebrides on Scotland's fabulous north west coast.

This spacious, modern house faces south and is situated at the western end of the scattered little community of Reiff, 6 miles from Achiltibuie (with shop, petrol station and famous Summer Isles Hotel), where the single track road comes to an end. It is only a few miles from some of Scotland's most famous mountains such as Coigach and Stac Pollaidh.

The house itself is as comfortable as its situation is spectacular and fitted with all 21st century amenities. There are two inviting seating areas for large parties to spread out into as there is a cosy sitting room and a superb sunroom/dining room. It has comfortable seating at one end, a door out to the decking (with furniture) and a large dining area at the other end.

Glazed doors lead through to the very spacious kitchen that is well-equipped with a large range cooker (with feature Highland seascape tiling splashback) and additional seating at its little breakfast bar. There is a family/play area beside the kitchen that is kept cosy by an enormous wood-burning stove and is a great place for children to play.

Also on this level are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, as well as a useful utility room housing the laundry facilities and a handy shower room. Having bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor makes the house very suitable for party members who have limited mobility.

Upstairs are four further bedrooms, two doubles (one with en suite shower room), a twin bedroom and another room with a day bed and pull-out bed underneath. A family bathroom completes the indoor accommodation.

Outside is the decking area (with furniture) and a grassed garden that is bounded by a traditional dry stone dyke. Beyond that is the rocky foreshore (with some sand at low tide) which is bound to delight children and keep them amused for hours. If all of that is scuppered by a rainy day, there is a table tennis table in the garage for them to use.

With such attention to detail and so much to like both inside and out, it is hardly surprising that guests return again and again.

Map & Local

This really is the most wonderful area for a holiday, with the sea on your doorstep, the mountains behind and lots of coastal and hill walks if you don't feel up to tackling the higher peaks.

The cliffs at Reiff are also quite famous and offer excellent opportunities (mostly single-pitch climbs) for novice and experiences rock-climbers alike.

The 'wee mad road' over to Lochinver is an absolute must - the scenery is breathtaking and your camera will never be in its case. Stop off at the Kirkaig Falls on your way and climb Suilven if you are feeling particularly energetic. If not, you can have coffee and browse in the remarkable bookshop that is in the middle of nowhere.

There is a pub at Polbain (4 miles) and the Summer Isles Hotel at Achilitibuie is internationally famous with excellent meals available either at the bar (all year) or in its award-winning restaurant (closed in winter). The nearest centre for shopping is at Ullapool, which is about an hour's drive away. From there, you may take the ferry to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.
