An hour and a half's drive from Inverness, the area around Loch Kishorn, a large sea water loch, provides an attractive haven from the day-to-day bustle and noise of modern day life. Not far from the loch's edge you will find Loch Kishorn Cottage.
Exceedingly Scottish with its bright, whitewashed walls and feature wood-panelling throughout, the cottage offers a unique mixture of elegant tradition and modern convenience. It sits in six acres of informal woodland gardens known as Little Courthill at the foot of the Applecross mountains. As you would expect, there are magnificent views of these mountains to be enjoyed from every room.
The cottage has been lovingly restored to retain many original features and has the ambience of a real, traditional Scottish country cottage. It now provides the perfect place from which to explore the best beaches, mountains and wooded glens that the Wester Ross National Scenic Area has to offer.
The open plan living area is very comfortable with plenty of space to plan the next day’s adventure while relaxing in front of the cosy wood-burning stove. The kitchen/dining area is well-equipped and the downstairs shower room with its incredibly spacious shower is a real bonus. Also on the this floor you’ll find a double bedroom with a king-size bed and a very Highland feel to it.
Upstairs, are two further spacious bedrooms, a double and a twin, from which you can watch the sun setting over the mountains before drifting off to sleep. The double room has an en suite bathroom which, with its large freestanding, roll top bath, is the perfect place to unwind and relax after a day of taking in the beauty of your surroundings.
Approximately half a mile from Loch Kishorn Cottage is the village of Kishorn with its white-washed cottages strung along the shore. It is home to many local artists and their studios and the award-winning Kishorn Seafood Bar that serves beautiful, fresh local seafood.
The cottage is perfectly situated as a base for exploring the west coast; you can enjoy a variety of activities, from fishing to mountain biking, boat trips to kayaking, or the more leisurely pursuits of otter spotting and bird watching.
The Isle of Skye can be reached in less than an hour while the villages and hamlets of Wester Ross are well worth exploring from Plockton to Applecross, Gairloch and on to Ullapool. On the way there are plenty of sandy beaches, mountains and woodland walks to explore. The chance of spotting an otter, pine martin or eagle adds to the dramatic coastal and mountain landscape experience.
Lochcarron (6 miles) to the south east has a restaurant, hotels, cafe, shop, butcher and garage. Shieldaig (8 miles) to the north has a hotel, cafe and shop.
To the north and west of the cottage is the Applecross peninsula which, until the coast road was completed in 1975, was only accessible by boat or by traversing the mountains via the spectacular Bealach na Ba, ‘Pass of the Cattle’, which reaches 2,053 feet. At the top don’t forget to stop and take in the views across to Skye and the islands beyond before heading down to the Applecross Inn for some excellent local food and refreshment.
