Ross-shire
This sprawling county north of Inverness is divided into Wester and Easter Ross, both of which have their own particular charms. The east coast incorporates Cromarty and the lovely Black Isle peninsula, while the west has its spectacular coastline, including the Applecross peninsula and the wonderful beaches there and at Gairloch and Gruinard.
Inland too there is wonderful countryside of mountains and tumbling rivers and such delights as the picturesque spa village of Strathpeffer - in short, something for everyone.

So Much to Explore
Turning eastwards at the Tore roundabout just a few miles north of Inverness is the main route of access to the Black Isle, which is a peninsula rather than an island, and one which is famous for its birdlife. It is seldom that some of the recently reintroduced red kites, recognisable by their notched tails, cannot be seen soaring in the air near the roundabout.
For a rich selection of wading birds, the bay at Munlochy is the place. The peninsula has several charming villages, such as Avoch and Fortrose/Rosemarkie, while nearby Chanonry Point is one of the prime dolphin watching sites in all of Europe.
At the end of the peninsula is the sleepy and enchanting village of Cromarty, and as a further bonus, the peninsula has its own brewery and a distillery at Muir of Ord.
Further to the north, the main A9 bypasses further attractive villages with an equally attractive hinterland behind them and leads up to Tain and the southern shores and sandy beaches of the Dornoch Firth, which forms the border with Sutherland. The highest mountain of this part of the world is Ben Wyvis near Garve, which is a fairly easy ascent and affords magnificent views.
While the craggy peaks of Easter Ross's western counterpart may seem lacking in comparison, it still has plenty of lovely countryside in terms of woodlands and moorlands, quiet river valleys, tumbling waterfalls and glorious beaches, to explore.

25-Mar-2024 | Am Bothan GM2 (overall) | Just as one would expect - good
26-Mar-2024 | The Black Barn DB7 (overall) | Got back to us quick when asked questions about stay
26-Mar-2024 | East Denwick Mill GA1 (overall) | We liked that the owner was available next door, but wasn't at all intrusive. He gave us information about the island when we asked for it. So just the right amount of support.
26-Mar-2024 | River Cottage at Old Melrose CN6 (overall) | We have stayed twice River Cottage and love both the cottage and surrounding countryside. When you arrive, there is a lovely hamper with homemade bread and marmalade, plus freshly laid eggs. The cottage is very clean, well-appointed and organised. The kitchen is great to cook in. We would recommend bringing a shower cap for the excellent overhead shower. The owners, who live next door, are very pleasant, welcoming and discreet. We hardly noticed them apart from the odd times when our paths crossed. The grounds are lovely for walking and have access to the river Tweed. In the local towns, there are some excellent small shops that are worth exploring, especially for food and books!
24-Mar-2024 | Am Bothan GM2 (overall) | Customer service team is very helpful and friendly. Overall service was excellent.
26-Mar-2024 | The Owl House GK2 (overall) | Easy to book, helpful.
23-Mar-2024 | Skylark Cottage CF1 (overall) | Booked our stay via Unique Cottages and was very satisfied with the service as everything went smoothly.
23-Mar-2024 | Coldwells Cottage EK5 (overall) | Professional service from booking to completion of holiday. Timely reminders and kept informed via email. The only aspect of Unique Cottages service that I don't like is the £150 compulsory cleaning deposit, other cottage holiday booking agencies do not have this charge.
26-Mar-2024 | Sea Cottage AA3 (overall) | We have used Unique Cottages several times and have been happy with the booking process and cottage descriptions.
26-Mar-2024 | Customs House GE5 (overall) | Excellent clean house |
