Overview

It is easily reached from the mainland either via the twenty minute car ferry crossing from Mallaig (at the end of The Road to the Isles) to Armadale, or by road via the Skye Bridge and finally a single-track road with passing places. This beautiful area, the Garden of Skye, offers a spectacular location with heavenly scenery, plenty of wildlife and of course, those amazing west coast sunsets.

Sheep are everywhere on the grassy/rocky hillocks and the views all around are amazing. The owner loves escaping here himself and it follows that he has done everything to ensure that this delightful cottage has every comfort, while remaining true to its essential ethos. The cottage is comfortably furnished and wood-lined throughout and this, along with its open-plan living area and large windows downstairs, gives it quite a Scandinavian feel.

The sitting area is at the far end of the living area, with windows on two walls all the better for enjoying the wonderful views. The fitted kitchen is very spacious, with plenty of room for dining as well. Also on this level are two bedrooms, a double and a twin, which while compact have everything you’ll need and a shower room.

The cottage roof pitches quite steeply, which means that there has been room to create a very attractive gallery space at the top of the staircase. This area can be used as an extra lounge that will be particularly popular with younger party members. They can escape up here and use it as a playroom from where they can still keep an eye on their elders (or more likely the other way around) on the level below. The cottage is well-heated with good insulation and is triple-glazed, so is suitable for all times of the year.

Outside there is parking right at the door and a rough grassed garden (with furniture). There is a shingle beach nearby and a good stretch of sandy beach just a four minute walk from the cottage, from which you can enjoy one of the very best views (across the loch) of the Cuillin Mountains on the whole island – it is truly spectacular at all times of the year.

There is a jetty from which to launch boats (at your own risk) and seals and otters can often be glimpsed from it. MacGregor is an ideal base for active family holidays or just relaxing in lovely surroundings.

Map & Local

There is a hotel at Isle Ornsay which has a good bar and a restaurant and at Ardvasar there is another, plus a small general store.

The Eilean Iarmain Hotel at Isle Ornsay has a famous hotel which also serves bar meals. The nearest shops of any size on the island are at Broadford (15 miles).

In this idyllic spot, there is no need to roam far to spot the local wildlife. Quite often on the little road over to the cottage you will meet herds of deer - this is one reason why it is a good idea not to drive too fast. Seals can often be seen in the waters of the loch, as well as otters playing on the shoreline.

The main roads on Skye are excellent, making it easy to reach every part of this wonderful island. To the south, on the way to Armadale, is the Gaelic College which hosts frequent ceilidhs and events through the year to which visitors are welcome. At Armadale itself is the Clan Donald Centre and Armadale Castle Gardens and boat trips go from Ardvasar to spot the local marine wildlife. Most of the island lies to the north and you can be at the capital, Portree, in about an hour. On the way is Sconser, where there is a golf course and from there ferries ply across to the magical and peaceful island of Raasay – definitely one for the to-do list.

At Sligachan, the road forks and there is direct access to the Red Cuillin. Take the left fork to head for the Talisker Distillery at Carbost or Dunvegan, with its historic castle, where you can see the famous Fairy Flag and the coral beaches. Beyond Portree, you can continue to Staffin, with the amazing rock formations of the Old Man of Storr (a lovely walk with magnificent views) and the Quiraing.
