Tapsalteerie is nestled down a quiet lane in the picturesque fishing village of Crail in the East Neuk of Fife, on Scotland's popular east coast. The name Tapsalteerie means 'topsy-turvy' but the cottage is anything but!

With the main part of an old bake-house situated next door, this c-listed traditional sandstone cottage, built in 1800, was where the bread was originally brought to cool. It has been refurbished to the highest of standards to ensure that guests want for nothing.
The apartment has gas central heating and is all on one level making all areas easily accessible. You enter through a small porch area with storage for coats and boots, which is handy for when you come in from the nearby beach. The charming open plan living area has quality, comfortable furniture round a focal fireplace and the kitchen area is modern and well-equipped. There is a folding dining table and chairs that can be brought out when needed. The open plan layout is ideal for couples, as they can still chat while meals are being prepared.
The spacious double bedroom (with king-size bed) is light and airy and has an elegant French style oak armoire. The luxury shower room, with large walk-in shower, is fully tiled and very contemporary in feel.
There is parking just opposite the cottage or at the free parking area a mere 50 yards away. Just 100 yards down the lane towards the beach is Crail Pottery, a well-known local family business producing a lovely range of earthenware and ceramic items. Tapsalteerie's owner has certainly made good use of the local resources, as the cottage's name sign and porch tiles come from here.
The beautiful beach is only a five minute walk away and en route is a delightful tearoom with homemade cakes and views out over the sea.
Crail is a traditional village and though small, has plenty of amenities including pubs, restaurants, a butcher, a small supermarket and a fish and chip shop. You can even go down to the Lobster Hut by the harbour where you can buy lobster and crab freshly cooked and prepared for eating.
The string of nearby pretty seaside villages along the coast originally relied on the fishing industry and most are still working fishing villages. They also all boast their own individual attractions including The Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther (also renowned for its award-winning fish and chips restaurant), the Crail Food Festival and Pittenweem's famous Arts Festival.
There is plenty to do in the surrounding area and if you are looking to soak up some history, head to Scotland's Secret Bunker (4 miles). This cold war bunker lies beneath an innocent looking farmhouse 100 feet underground. It is the size of two football pitches and is open to the public to explore.
If golf is your sport of choice you can't do better so make sure you bring your clubs! There are several famous golf courses nearby including one at Crail itself and of course, the Old Course at St Andrews (10 miles).
Dundee (23 miles), with its famous university, has plenty of shops and eateries and Glamis Castle (35 miles), the childhood home of the late Queen Mother, is also worth a visit. There is skiing at Glenshee (53 miles) and the bustling capital of Edinburgh (50 miles), with plenty of shops, museums and art galleries is also easily accessible for a day trip.
