St Monans, Fife

Pend Garden Cottage has a great deal going for it.  Firstly, its situation.  It is on the waterfront of the quaint little fishing village of St Monans, 13 miles from St Andrews in the East Neuk of Fife, with lovely views across the Firth of Forth to the Bass Rock from the windows on its first and second floors.  Secondly, its quality.  It has been lovingly restored and refurbished by its owners with an eye to making it their home in the future.  Thirdly, unusually for the houses which huddle round the harbour here, it has behind it a delightful, enclosed, south facing garden, again with fine views, where children can play safely and adults relax with a glass of wine on a summer's evening.

Typically for these old fisherfolk's houses, Pend Garden extends over three floors, connected by steepish stairs.  The owners have used the space in the most rational and sensible way - you cook and eat on the ground floor, relax on the first and sleep on the second, with 'facilities' on the top two levels.

St Monans is a pretty village, with a famous seafood restaurant just yards from the cottage, as well as shops, pub and cafe.  You can strike out in either direction along the Fife coastal trail, and look out for seals and dolphins in the Firth.  Take boat trips from nearby Elie to view the seabird colonies on the Bass Rock, or strike inland to visit Falkland Palace, Kellie Castle and the like.

Most of the small villages along the coast have their own often excellent golf course, and of course famous St Andrews is just a few minutes drive up the road.  The beaches there and at Tentsmuir, just a little further on, are long and often almost empty expanses of beautiful golden sands.

This is an ideal venue for a quiet and relaxing holiday, but if you do wish to explore further afield, half an hour will bring you to the M90 Perth-Edinburgh motorway, which will whisk you north or south.  Another alternative is to catch the train from Cupar (14m) or Kirkcaldy (17m) into Edinburgh (47m) across the famous Forth Bridge.

Bed linen, towels, central heating and electricity are all INCLUDED.  One well behaved dog is welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no cats, and smoking is not permitted within the house.

Rodger family, Tyne and Wear 28/07/2009

Very enjoyable week due to the weather - every day it rained but every day it was also glorious; the location, the accommodation, and the nearness of everything. Big highlight for me was observing the changing sky and tide from the vantage point upstairs. The kids loved finding little crabs 60 yards from the front door. So all in all superb and thanks for having us.

This is our first stay at the cottage. A 50th birthday celebration. It couldn't have been better. Lovely cottage, village and area. We hope we will be back.

This is our second visit and we enjoyed it just as much as the first time.
